Essential business primer for a new healthcare professional,
By A Customer
This review is from: Business Mastery : A Guide for Creating a Fulfilling, Thriving Business and Keeping It Successful (Paperback)
While bookstore browsing, this book literally jumped off the shelf at me. I wondered why a book entitled "Business Mastery" was in the health section; after I flipped through, I knew the reason. It is geared towards new health care professionals, either in school or new graduates, and also is of value to experienced professionals, as myself. This is more a handbook on how to get in touch with what you want out of a private practice, and how to make it materialize. The first section is an excellent right-brained exercise in gathering left-brained materal to transform into a business plan. As an experienced physician with an established practice, I found some useful techniques to renew my practice focus. I have since used the book as a basic text in a business class for new health care professionals, and in consulting new professionals wanting to build a large, successful practice.

Worthwhile reading,
This review is from: Business Mastery : A Guide for Creating a Fulfilling, Thriving Business and Keeping It Successful (Paperback)
I was very pleased with this book. I would recommend to any health professional. It is very helpful to anyone trying to start or improve a business so that ideas can be put in an orderly manner conducive to building a career. It is also useful to someone in a career as an employee because it deals not only with owning a business but with managing a career and a life. This book sets up a matrix upon which personal and professional life can be integrated for the greatest fulfillment of its user. The book is full of ideas, and is especially good with instructions on developing a strategic operating plan. Before reading this book, the reader should have some experience as a decision maker for a business or have taken a few college courses in business.

I don't know how Cherie Sohnen-Moe does it but Business Mastery just keeps getting better. I just bought the 3rd edition, (we are a little slow getting books down here in Australia) and since I had the two eariler editions, I didn't think the third would have any more information of use to me. Was I wrong!

impractical and boring,
This review is from: Business Mastery : A Guide for Creating a Fulfilling, Thriving Business and Keeping It Successful (Paperback)
One of the most boring and impractical books I've ever read. This was the textbook used in my massage college for teaching business-building skills and establishing a clinical practice. There is very little practical or useful advice, especially for the massage or bodywork practitioner. The information is bland, the writing style hopelessly boring and the methodolgy flawed. Great on presenting theory but comes up short with information that truly works. When I began teaching massage therapy and Career Development, "Business Mastery" was the only textbook I was allowed to use. No other book put my students into a mental stupor more quickly than this one. Marketing advice should be simple, exciting and inspire you to see possibilities; this book makes it about as desirable as a root canal.
If you are interested in practical advice, I would recommend "Marketing Massage- How To Build Your Dream Practice", by Monica Rosenberry. Her methods are not based on classroom rhetoric or theory. To write her book, Monica interviewed and observed therapists from all over the United States, then catalogued the techniques/approaches that work and the ones that don't. She also offers the observations of clients/patients, what drives them away forever or keeps them coming back for years. Monica is a therapist herself, so has plenty of first-hand advice to offer in addition to interviews.

This was a really great book. I'm a massage therapist, but this book has great advice for all sorts of businesses. It's easy to read, has great info and even a little funny at times. It's really well written and I highly recommend it.

You've mastered your studies, but to start a successful business or to manage an existing one you need to understand business operations - what business book can you turn to? This one!
There are many great books on business, many great books on the plethora of holistic modalities out there. The authors of this book understand both sides of the practitioners needs and put it together well, with great examples to work with. While the examples typically focus on massage/touch therapy, just about everything can be translated to other practices, such as Reiki, Acupuncture etc. - the basic concepts remain the same. While there are a few chapters that run a bit long, I feel this book is worthwhile in any practitioner's collection. I have a copy of this book in my home office and plan to buy a second reference copy for my clinic. An invaluable reference guide!

A must for any working therapist!,

Written specifically for bodyworkers, Business Mastery is simply among the best business references for our profession. Presented in an accessible format, Cherie Sohnen-Moe speaks to the special needs of the professional therapist. The fact is that you are self employed whether you have your own practice or you are working for someone else as an independent contractor. Keeping that in mind, a book such as Business Mastery is as important as any of the anatomy and technique books in your library. Having designed and taught the business curriculum for a major massage school, Business Mastery remains my primary recommendation for anyone looking to pick up a first-class business reference manual.
