Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The CEO of Steiner Sports Marketing has rubbed elbows with some of the biggest names in sports. Here he advises readers to use these superstars' strategies to achieve success in the business world. He offers 10 principles of leadership, strategy, planning, and success: start with a road map; find your niche; wake up nervous; know your purpose; go the extra mile; realize that you never know where you might wind up; get focused; know that nothing changes if nothing changes; understand it's not what happens, it's what you do; and see success as a habit. The book includes 50 photographs of athletes and coaches, and while some of the advice is sound enough, the quotes tend toward the forgettable utterances that occur when athletes have microphones shoved in their faces after a game. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great book. Easy to follow. Very Enjoyable., November 8, 2003

Mr. Steiner came to our campus to discuss his book. We found him to be very personable, and decided to buy his book. We are given a lot of required reading, and it is refreshing to have a book that is appropriate towards our studies that can give us a real world outlook of the business world and what we can do to help us succeed upon our entry.

Mr. Steiner relays his own personal experiences, as well as those of athletes he has met, and puts them into a format that expresses in terms we can all understand of the various ethics and motivations one should have when working in the business world. They are insightful and appropriate.

By having the book break into side stories within each chapter of certain instances or occurances that relate to the chapter's discussion makes it even more enoyable to read.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to other students, and I am in the process of buying it and having it mailed to my high school buddy at another college. Thanks Amazon for making it easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the Plan, the team and the Customer that count!, October 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Business Playbook: Leadership Lessons From the World of Sports (Hardcover)
Steiners sports team oriented approach to management is an awakening for those that get caught up in "Big Picture"
and ultimately end up forgeting all of the small blocking
and tackling details that make a business successful
in all economic environments. Are we putting our people in
a position to win? Do we have a plan and are we communicating the plan? Are we paying attention to our customer's need
no matter how small or large they are. The book entertains
with anecdotes from Athletes and Steiner. A refreshing,
insightful quick read that provides applicable insight
to any type of business.

I had the pleasure of receiving this book as a gift. I read it over the weekend and found it to be entertaining and insightful. The various stories within each chapter drills home simple advice which should help focus the saleman and help him realize those goals he sets forth for himself.

I recommend giving this book out not just to your top producers, but to those who need additional guidance and motivation to succeed.

This is also a good book to give to a kid who is in college or grad school looking to enter the business world. It would help them create good work ethics and business principles.
