I was first introduced to Ron's work at a Data Management Association (DAMA) 2 years ago. I attended a brief seminar and learned about the business rules approach to developing requirements. I subsequently attended 2 courses and I've been using the Business Rules Concepts book on a regular basis to document requirements for users at my company. We are starting to introduce the business rules concepts laid out in this book into our data governance processes as well. The basic premise behind the book is that business rules underlie all of our key business processes. In order to set a sturdy foundation, you need to take the time up front to develop proper terminology and definitions, fact types, fact models, and carefully worded business rules in order to develop a solid understanding of your business. Without this understanding, you will be doomed to revisiting the same data quality issues over and over again.

Ron lays out a very actionable foundation and plan for harvesting business rules in your company. As a senior manager in a larger commercial organization, this approach has already repaid itself at least 100 times over, if not more - that includes the seminars. The book is very readable with lots of examples to help you get started. I am not using an automated tool to manage my business rules; I'm still using Excel which is fine right now because I've started small and I'm trying to grow our library of business rules organically. I highly recommend this book. Even if you don't adopt all of the recommended processes, you will at least gain a solid understanding of how to document rules within a requirements document.

In addition to being a hands-on approach type of book, it also provides tips for managing business rules from an organizational management perspective. Again, I highly recommend this book.
