Let me start by telling you that this is an amazing book. This is not only a a book about boxers but about the struggles in life and what it takes to make it in life. I have always wondered how some boxers got started in the sport and I have found it in this book. Gabriel Ruelas was one of my favorite boxers growing up and after reading his life story it makes me like him even more. I had no idea want he went through as a child. I also wondered what happened to him and how he dealt with the death of his opponent Jimmy Garcia the night he defended his title. All I can say is that you will be amazed! I cannot say enough about this great book. In addition to the Ruelas story there are many more. 17 to be exact. You don't have to be a boxing fan to enjoy this book. This book will motivate and inspire you. It is a lesson on lives struggles. On how you have to work hard and learn from your mistakes to make in this world.

Araceli Martinez-Rose did a fantastic job! Araceli thank you for writing this book I am sure that it will inspire many people. Thank you for taking us inside the lives of all these great champions and all the people around them that made it possible.

I am not a boxing fan or enthusiast but this book engrossed and captivated me from the start. Yes, this is a book about 2006 California Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee Gabriel Ruelas. However, in following the arc of the former Super Featherweight Champion's life (from Ruelas' impoverished childhood to his post-boxing days of regret and sorrow), the book provides entree to many worlds. There is, of course, the world familiar to most casual spectators of the sport, where boxers meet in the roaring din of thousands of fans under the light and glitter of Vegas title bouts. There is the grueling world of training, where many dedicated years are spent in boxing gyms with well-worn wood floors stained with the sweat, spit and blood of untold numbers of hopefuls. There is the economic and tactical world of bout machinations, where trainers, managers and promoters make decisions regarding the size of purses, which fights to engage boxers in, whether to stop or continue fights, how much time to take off between fights and whether to continue supporting and nurturing a boxer. Most poignantly, there are the childhood worlds in Yerbabuena, Mexico (estimated population size of 4,378 as of year 2004), Los Angeles barrios and disadvantaged U.S. towns from where dreams and champions come.

Via first person narratives from Ruelas, family members, loved ones, current boxers, former boxers, trainers, managers, promoters, and even a boxing glove manufacturer, the story of Ruelas and boxing is beautifully told. With each narrative, a different perspective is given and Ruelas' story unfolds with greater nuance and complexity.
