Scarpington is dull, a sleepy town in the East Midlands. Simon Bognor has been sent there to report back to the Board of Trade. When he gets there all seems calm until the President of the Scarpington Artisan Lodge dies and then, two days later, the barman of the Talbot Pub also dies.

What he finds there, however, startles his sensibilities: the Artisan's Lodge, an apparently austere and admired club of privilege and influence, provides cover for well-organized sex games, ruthless business takeovers, and perhaps even murder. The novel is hindered by its lack of serious intent, several wild and crazy characters, unlikely personal and place names, and Simon's constant drink-induced high. For series fans only.
