Don't praise a baby too much; bring money to a funeral; limit your sentences to 12 words; visit the Hanoi office despite what they tell you in Saigon; coffee and tea markets are booming-these are just a few snippets of the practical advice offered in this work by Engholm (Doing Business in Asia's Booming "China Triangle," Prentice, Hall, 1994). There are excellent chapters on negotiating, etiquette, and protocol, which are often inexplicably lacking in other "doing business in" titles. The text is arranged within the chapters in Q&A format, with answers consisting of a few paragraphs to a few pages. Included are a brief glossary, country profile, useful business addresses (banks, embassies, etc.), directory of trade contacts, sample contracts, visitor information (lists nightclubs and discos!), and a bibliography. This is basically a "how to" Q and A book resembling what might be a FAQ sheet about Vietnam. As a result it is rather disorganized and has little in the way of analysis or opinion. Theoretically, the book covers most of the legal, financial and bureaucratic hurdles one might encounter while doing business in Vietnam. Unfortunately, theory and reality have yet to meet in Vietnam.
