5.0 out of 5 stars Applicability of a Woodworking Book to Business, August 9, 2000
By
ALEJANDRO ESCUDERO C/SERVISTOR,S C (ATIZAPÁN DE ZARAGOZA, EDO.DE MÉXICO Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Business of Woodwork (Hardcover)
This book is one of the kind. It is nor a recipe of highly sophisticated concepts, but rather the experience of a Woodwork business owner passed on to the reader.

If You are a woodwork business owner or manager primarily in the architectutal, store fixtures and specialty cabinetry trades, wanting and needing to have a better structured business approach this book is a must for you.

From chapter 1, where the business operating cycle is defined as the spectrum of events, the book takes You in a simple manner through computers, marketing, with Norm's first rule"Don't sell something unless You know how to manufacture it" and if I may add, this is a very important principle in the ISO9000 standards.

The bidding process in chapter 4, has a realistic set of items and fundamentals to consider when You bid. The costing and pricing chapter, take the reader to close the sale. Other parts of the book, conduct the flow of the business process in a very practical fashion through the manufacturing process from the Order Entry, the Scheduling,Drafting,Purchasing,Plant Lay-Out,Supervision,Machinery,Operations,People,Accounting,Job Costing, cash Flow,Inventory,Machinery Purchase,Buying or Selling the Business and finally Make it happen.

I bought this book sometime ago and have read it and referred to it every now and then when lecturing younger people and lending it to them since the skilled people are scarce in this trade in México just as much as it is in the U.S.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Woodwork Business Practice, March 31, 2004
This review is from: The Business of Woodwork (Hardcover)
Bill is a long-time and loyal supporter of good business practices for fine woodworking. He has contributed to the success of many, many professional woodworkers. This book reminds all of us of the fundamentals of day-to-day operations, particularly if your workflow requires living in the "bidding" marketplace. Every professional woodworker should own this book and re-read it once a year to remain grounded in the basics of successful business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plainly put good sense, September 4, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Business of Woodwork (Hardcover)
The book makes a strong case for strategic and tactical planning rather than reactive, enervating games of "catch up." Too many woodworkers seem to regard our industry as existing outside the normal laws of business, time, and space. Norlin's book refutes this perspective, stressing that every facet of operations demands consideration and ongoing revision. Norlin's book stresses clarity, accountability, and rigorous procedural review. A solid text for the working pro.
