A book you can use over and over again,
By A Customer
This review is from: You Are What You Wear (Business and casual style in a 'clicks and mortar' world) (Paperback)
I only buy books I can use over and over again. This book I use as a reference guide before I buy a new suit or custom made shirts. Also most people I see; purchase their suit and do not properly do alterations or let their tailor do them insufficiently. My experience is that most people in any kind of work will do their job in a fashion that is easier for them and not the customer. Since purchasing Mr. Thourlby's book, my tailor and shirtmaker know I mean business when I visit them. The book is also very easy to read and entertaining. My favorite chapter is: To Soap or Not to Soap. And one of my lady friends who have read this book recommends this chapter to most men. Serge BarrantesFinancial Futures Trader

The book that changed my life,
By Vladimir and Mary Hykel (Financial Times, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You Are What You Wear (Business and casual style in a 'clicks and mortar' world) (Paperback)
Dear Mr. Thourlby,Thank you for your wonderful no-nonsense guide, You Are What You Wear. I bought a copy of it in a used book store and it has paid off immensely in increased self-esteem, increased respect, and increased income.Like many others I never gave a thought to what clothing "says" about a person.Color, style, cut, materials, now all seem to "talk" since you have given them a voice.Thank you for making the unspoken words of clothing visible. I now ask, "What does this tie, shirt, coat, hat, etc. say? Before I will put it on.I just bought your book, "Passport To Power", (full price I might add) and hope I enjoy it as much as the other book. Are you still teaching your course at Emory? I would love to attend it.

Where's the hollywood and the "clicks and mortar?",
By A Customer
This review is from: You Are What You Wear (Business and casual style in a 'clicks and mortar' world) (Paperback)
As a basic guide to fashion, this book is OK. The writing felt outdated and his writing ability sometimes grated and annoyed me. I would suggest to the author that he get help in writing any follow-ups to this book, as I think it would help to bring out his good knowledge of fashion. What pissed me off was that the book description mentions "secrets of hollywood" a bunch of times. He refers in the book to Hollywood, but he never gives you real information about what he learned there. His few examples that try to do this were poorly written and quaint. (You've got to read them to believe how so..." Secondly, there is NOTHING in this book about "clicks and mortar." I'm convinced [that]...SOMEONE added that subtitle to this book's amazon page to help sell more books. This bugged me, as I wanted something REAL about this. I felt ripped off, and although the book was a decent overview of men's style, I could have gotten that from another source with better illustrations and better writing.

You Are What You Wear: In This New Clicks and Mortar World,
By Forbes Wittenburgh & Brown - Publisher (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You Are What You Wear (Business and casual style in a 'clicks and mortar' world) (Paperback)
You Are What You Wear is a practical guide for you to take advantage of Hollywood's inside secret--its ability to transform a sometimes non-descript individual into one who is adored and celebrated by millions.<>This book also features 'calculated casual', explaining how you can maintain respect and authority when you dress down.<>William Thourlby's You Are What You Wear has become an instant success and a best seller because of its straightforward, plain-spoken exposition on the science of controlling visual perception.<>Drawing on his career experience as a model, actor, motion picture producer, clothier, and an award-winning internationally sydicated newspaper-columnist, he understands how the power of controlling how other people perceive you can propel you to greater success; of your choice, in your personal and professional life.<>It does not take a rocket scientist to accomplish what Mr. Thourlby advises. Income bracket is not what it is all about. What it is about is a simple, conservative, elegant appearance that conveys all the correct messages, that telegraphs that I am trustworthy, knowledgeable and responsible. That perception will give you the edge to convert how others see you as well as how you see yourself. When you control impressions you impress others as you take steps towards achieving all you wish to become.<>Here is a structured adoption of Mr. Thourlby's expertise regarding the science of the motion picture and television industries' wardrobe departments and their ability to control "visual perception" for your benefit.

OUTDATED!,
This review is from: You Are What You Wear (Business and casual style in a 'clicks and mortar' world) (Paperback)
I was all excited about this book, especially after reading the reviews. Boy, was I disappointed!!!!!!! This book is not only written with MEN ONLY in mind (all referenced made to men, pics of menswear, etc.), it must've been written at least FORTY YEARS ago. There are so many references to triple-ply 70's polyester and hippies, it seems horribly out of date and out of touch in the year 2008. The author keeps going around in circles about "you are what you wear, you are what you wear", but makes no startling revelations. I think it comes down to common sense: dress well, get treated with more respect - dress shabby and get treated as such (depending on your circumstances, of course.) I read half of this book and can take no more; it's going in the circular bin, if you know what I mean.

But have found much to be offered in this book. Will state that the author was very interested in pressing the point that clothing indeed makes the man. Got that from the first chapter. Unfortunately, I also got it from chapters 2-6. Once past the hard sell drone of how important his topic and point was, the author has given me much of the information I originally sought. Wished that there was my pictures to demonstrate topics and one chapter refers to a chart that does not exist in the edition. these short commings aside, the book is authoritative and a help to me. So much so that I have delayed purchasing some new clothes till I finish the book so as I may be better prepared in my next shopping safari.

"YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR" and books like it, seem good reference
points. (I have even put "You Are What You Wear" on my Wish List.) However, there is a better, and possibly less expensive way to find a look that makes a woman look authoritative. and impressive. And that is -- simply look at the styles that the women of Royalty are wearing --and adapt them for use in the office and other places in your own world. (I could write, "in the REAL" world -- but I won't, because everyone alive is part of the "real" world.) Royalty must stand out. So they wear very bright colours. You don't have to, (wearing a bright pink suit to work every day might make people think you were a little to egotistical.) So wear a somewhat darker colour....but perhaps highlight it with a lighter, contrasting colour brooch or trimming. Royal women wear the most outrageous hats -- yours need not be outrageous, just a hat of the same colour. (A neat trick is to wear a two- dress or suit. Then you can use the same, two-toned hat, with two or more suites! Gloves are also an unobtrusive way to stand out -- even Royal women hardly wear gloves-- today. The otherwise racous 1970-80s British comedy programme, "Benny Hill", yet had one piece of very good fashion advice, in the form of a joke. Q: What type of food describes how a lady wears her clothes? A: Baloney! (Below knee!) Look at pictures of royals -- today and in the '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. Look also at stylish non-royals: Jacqueline Kennedy wasn't called "Her Elegance" for nothing! This is where REAL style can be found. "Fashions" come and go -- but style and elegance are forever. Read "You Are What You Wear", and similar books, if you must --but, for the "real deal", watch and adapt the clothing which royalty -- both male and female -- wear! |
