5.0 out of 5 stars You'll be hooked once you hear Lisa Dewey's voice!, April 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Busk (Audio CD)
I was, and still am, every time I hear her beautiful music! I have two of her other albums (Lola Cuki & Weather Changer Girl), and she gets better and better every time. Her vocals are dreamy & amazing and the music will take you to another place in time. You can feel her pain and pleasure and get a great sense of the artist herself. She's been compared to the Cocteau Twins, the Cranberries, the Sundays, and Throwing Muses - I say she's a mix of all of these, but she definitely has her own style that is not to be forgotten! I have been waiting for this album to come out and I am very excited to have it finally. I knew I wouldn't be dissappointed - I never am with Lisa Dewey!

5.0 out of 5 stars "...Crazy thoughts keep running through my head...", June 22, 2004

i arrived home one day after having one of those frustrating days at work and noticed a package in the mail from amazon.com - 'right on! finally, some new music to listen to.'

let's get right to the point: i was NOT in the mood to hear something shallow nor minimal. so, after impatiently tearing the delivered package open (with delight, of course:) and looking through the selection of music available, i chose without hesitation. i fed 'Busk' to the CD player and cranked up the volume.

wow! from the first song, i was singing (i can't sing, but it didn't stop me from trying) along with the chorus part not realizing that the 'crazy thoughts' from my crappy day just sailed away.
the lyrics alone were powerful. add Lisa's unique delivery along with the Lotus Life providing top-notch, quality music and you have a definite winner. ***in my opinion, this is their best album to date.***
i won't compare Lisa Dewey's voice/style with the typical folk singer nor the band with the Cocteau Twins/Throwing Muses (some of my favorites though). instead, i'll just say: they took what's great about those artists just mentioned and brought it through their personal, wonderful talents into the current Century.
keep up the excellent work! i'll be pissed if you don't;)

5.0 out of 5 stars She finds her own voice, November 21, 2006

This is easily her best CD up until this point. As long as she works with Simon Raymonde her music will inevitably recall the Cocteau Twins. But I feel that she's found a distinct voice on this one, as compared to previous albums.

I also think the songwriting is simply better and the overall production more fully realized instead of simply being draped with glistening reverbs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Exhilirating!, April 15, 2004

Lisa Dewey has come a long way since her first album ten years ago. From an Ani Defranco-based folk singer to a more subdued Sarah McClachlan-style, Lisa has added a full-fledged band to her acoustic gems to produce a more lush full sound to her already beautiful voice that fancies all her female fans that swoon over her at her shows. Lyrically, the songs are diverse and give the listener a variety of Lisa's creative nature with song writing. The single, "Mellow Day," proves that Lisa is structuring her songs in a way that shows she can deliver a wave of mystique with her variety-driven writing style like no other bay-area artist can. Even the upbeat "Thieves In Thievery" has something about it that makes you wonder how she managed to take her own sound and add a bit of CRANBERRIES-esque towards the last half of the song. "The Cycle Is Now Broken" has a chorus in it that shows off Lisa's ability to stretch her vocal chords to the max and to understand what I'm talking about you'll just have to listen for yourself. Songs like "Two Baskets Of Your Clean Clothes" and "Sometimes" are more relaxed in nature yet stand out as the best epics on Busk both musically and lyrically. Evident throughout the album is the beautiful COCTEAU TWINS influence that makes Busk full of life and sweetness that is best explained when you find Simon Raymonde credited for production assistance.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Zen Tone Review, December 6, 2004

If ever there was an underrated album, this is it.
Buy it, you won't regret it.
There are very few artists who move me as a writer and this album did just that. It's music for driving the PCH, it's music for any occasion. Somehow and in some way, this record is going to leave its mark. Of this, I have no doubts...
As for the production, it's a totally 4AD, but that's OK by me.
The production really makes this album so far as the tone goes. The lyrics are from the heart and any individual would have to dig down deep inside to keep up with it. I will be paying attention to the Dew and the smell of those flowers for a long while...
