Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-Both of these picture books are based on true stories, but neither one is particularly successful. Rico's Hawk tells of a boy whose troubled home life and emotional difficulties lead his worried mother to take him to Green Chimneys, the Humane Society's farm/camp for troubled children. There, helping tend to injured and abused animals teaches Rico much about himself. The real breakthrough comes when he helps an injured hawk learn to fly. This event gives him the strength to face his own problems. Unfortunately, the story is written in forced, awkward verse, which makes it virtually unreadable. Buster is more appealing. It's a rather pedestrian story about a little girl who helps her new neighbor find her missing dog. The writing is competent, but there's nothing that makes it stand out in any way. There is little character development or suspense in either title. The pencil drawings accompanying them are pleasant, although rather bland, and do little to enhance appeal. Young readers will be better served by any of the wonderful animal stories that are already available.

I don't know who loves this story more, myself or my daughter! I look forward to reading it every night with her. Finding a book with a positive role model for girls is not easy to do--this book has it.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed this story. The waretcolor pictures are wonderful. Knowing that this is based on a true story is a plus. It shows the love and compassion of children.
