5.0 out of 5 stars Come on cats an' kittens, give it a listen, September 24, 2002

This review is from: Buster's Happy Hour (Audio CD)
Buster might of just been a figment of his own imagination but it did not keep him from puting out some swingin' smokin' music. Check it out man he brought one BIG band along for the party. Hey, it's all about fun anyway. Get your sweetie, your granny and the young un's and dance around the house like it's happy hour

4.0 out of 5 stars The REAL Buster Poindexter, June 25, 2005
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Buster's Happy Hour (Audio CD)
In 1984-85, after commercial failures with the New York Dolls and later as a solo artist, critically-acclaimed rocker David Johansen finally found his true voice -- in of all things, big-band jump R&B covers! Re-emerging as Buster Poindexter, his shows at Noo Yawk clubs (Tramps, The Bottom Line) were loose, raucous, hambone fun.

The late 80s brought two overly slick major-label albums and 15 minutes of TV talk-show fame with the now-dreaded "Hot Hot Hot." Fortunately, BUSTER'S HAPPY HOUR (1994) takes us back to the bars, where this music belongs. Guitarist Brian Koonin's impressively dry, straightforward production showcases such legendary live Busterworks as Lucky Millinder's "Big Fat Mamas Are Back in Style" and "The Worst Beer I Ever Had," a hilarious Johansen original.

This is a fun, generous CD (17 songs!) which provides the missing link between the Buster era and Johansen's fine acoustic roots-n-blues work with the Harry Smiths (2000-02) and the Dolls "reunion" of 2004-05.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swing This Baby!!!!, May 19, 2004

This review is from: Buster's Happy Hour (Audio CD)
Songs about alchohol, big fat mamas. Verrrry Dirrrty! A lot of fun!! Jump blues of Louis Prima, Cab Calloway and Louis Jordan at their best. Stand-up bass player is still Tony Garnier (ex. Brian Setzer Orchestra, Robert Gordon, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan,...). Soozie Tyrell (ex. Bruce Springsteen)sings duet on Saturday Night Fish Fry and of course violin, drummer Tony Machine (ex. New York Dolls, David Johansen)are still in a band too. Must buy for all swingers and rock 'n' roll fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great party record at a great price, April 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Buster's Happy Hour (Audio CD)
Buster/David Johansen seems forever a step ahead of what's in fashion. On this gem from '94, Buster and his Banshees of Blue and the Uptown Horns rip through a set of Jump Blues and swinging r'n'b. The set list is culled from the likes of the Liggins brothers, Johnny Otis and Roy Brown. Louis Jordan's Saturday Night Fish Fry is a stand out and there are a bunch of songs devoted to the ups and downs of drinking. Huge fun, as are all Buster's records. But will he ever catch a wave again?

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, Demon Alcohol! Sad Memories I Can't Recall!, February 21, 2006

This review is from: Buster's Happy Hour (Audio CD)
Got this CD by accident and had absolutely no desire to listen to it. When I was bored one evening, I put this CD on and was absolutely surprised and blown away. Here is a CD filled with drinking songs, and is so fun without turning into total cheese. This CD was a favorite for a year and stayed in the player. My favorite song is Alcohol for it's endearing lyrics and sing-along quality. Don't miss this awesome CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly one of the best albums to drink to...ever!, June 26, 2000

Of course, you must be responsible and of legal age to drink to this record. The whiskey-soaked blues/cabaret grunge that is this album goes down hard but warms you up fast. As an owner of many New York Dolls/David Johansen/Buster Poindexter albums, I can safely recommend this one as a "must have", particularly if you're a fan of the blues or Buster's prior works (consider this the real "late night" version of the Buster show, when the juices are sinking in and you're a few minutes away from last call!

All played with top notch musicians with respect to the music!!! Very vintage recording methods, you cam tell they did some basic room microphones. But it doesn't take away from the quality.

Party record for sure!! Just find this! It grows on you, Buster knows what he's doing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great juke joint record, June 21, 2008
This review is from: Buster's Happy Hour (Audio CD)
This album has a very good sound and it sounds as though it could have been meant for a beer blast in the backwoods or in a post modernist jazz lounge in Chicago, New York, or New Orleans. It's as cheezy as a vegas act but it's supposed to be. The music is on point and that adds to the humor. If you want to be depressed while nursing your beer this is the wrong album. If you are in the mood to get loaded with some rowdy friends and go hogging if all else fails this is a good soundtrack for a night of unbridled friendly debauchery.
