Editorial Reviews

Richard Pryor stars in this wild, wacky and warmhearted road movie with a difference, which later inspired a TV series. When budget cuts close a children's home in Philadelphia, Vivian Perry (Emmy Award winner Cicely Tyson ) decides to help eight special-education students by taking them to her aunt's farm outside Seattle. In desperate need of a driver/mechanic for the bus, she teams up with Joe Braxton (Pryor), an equally desperate ex-con who hates women and children. Fueled by Roberta Flack's songs, the action is fast and funny as this delightfully mismatched group battles the bus, the law, the Ku Klux Klan and even each other on their way west. But it all ends happily for the kids, the con and the straitlaced lady.

I hadn't thought about this movie for some time. I was in this movie. I was a King County deputy (outside Seattle) at the time working off duty for set security on this movie and was invited to be in it. I am one of the two cops (the one with all the hair) at the end of the movie confronting Richard Pryor. It was very interesting being involved in this movie. I got to meet Cycely and Richard Pryor and actually small talk for a bit with them between scenes. As far as the movie itself - I enjoyed it. It is funny and actually touching in parts. There were parts of this movie that were redone at a later date to "soften" it up some for the new improved Pryor (after his accident). The kids in this movie were great and some of them were actually disabled to some degree. Yes, I agree it would be interesting to see how some of the kids are doing now..24 yrs later. By the way, I don't have all the hair anymore. It is interesting to watch a movie filmed in your home area. Watch this movie...it is worth it. Sherlock

This movie was funny, and made for everyone. I would be happy to
share it with my daughter. One of the few movies Richard stars in for a kid crowd. Ms.Tyson plays the mother role to perfection
with all the childrens roles shining. I think this movie was a
big hit for foster children. It showed the system in a funny way.
Again, it was so funny. I think every home should own this movie. Richard of old, with the funny for all time.

Richard Pryor does gives an heartwarming performance in a comedy, often realistic film about a man all is life, been living as a theft. One day, he cought him red handed stealing from a department store. They give him a parole, if he could drive all the way to the country with social worker(Played by Cicely Tyson) and a group of street kids. He accepts but given an very old school bus, has a lot of problems and kids are given him, a hard time to deal with. But he gets to know them with helping and talking there problems to them, even he talks about his own pass. Telling them about his hard times and difficult life, have been through in all these years in the streets.
The film does have some strong moments. Easy mix of slapstick humour and drama in surprisingly good way. Likable Characters of kids in the movie. The picture does often have street language but does have the heart of a family movie. I haven`t seen all the films of Richard Pryor but he gives a memorable role and probably his best role to date. Definitely a movie worth watching with friends and family. Grade:B+.

This movie is my favorite movie, it makes me life but it also keeps lifes blessings in perspective. I am not a person that likes to watch movies over and over again, but this is the best. This movie so funny you will be laughing hours later over the realism and perfection of acting. The kids in this movie where underrated during this time and should have been commended highly of their wonderful performance. This movie is what makes true legends like RICHARD PRYOR AND CICELY TYSON who they are today and forever will have the effects on America.
This movie is wonderful

As it stands right now, I am in the position of seeing a feature film script that I wrote getting produced in the coming months (until the financing officially gets released, I'm not counting any of that money yet). But I was told to write a "family-friendly" film so I did. A first. We had a 3-hour conference call and I got five pages of notes on top of that for all of the "inaproppriate" and "too grown up" things in the script.

Since I was raised on comedies like BLAZING SADDLES, ANIMAL HOUSE and CADDYSHACK--definitely NOT family entertainment--I'm not the best judge of what families should be watching and laughing at.

You wouldn't believe what I had to take out of my script. The production company had me cut all cigarette-smoking scenes and I was eventually permitted one scene with cigarettes. I had to take out the term "work release program." Yeah, that restrictive. I was told, in today's climate, that cigarettes shown in a mainstream film will probably guarantee a PG-13.

So I bought a DVD copy of the 1981 Richard Pryor movie, BUSTIN' LOOSE, to give to the VP of Production (he was the one citing MPAA rules during our calls and meetings)...just to see his head explode.

BUSTIN' LOOSE is a family film. And even though Richard Pryor's name is all over it (star, producer, story credit), I don't think anyone told Richard that this was a nice family film. He plays a small-time hood tasked by his parole officer to take a bus full of special needs kids across the country. There's a genuine heart to this film...but the language is harsh and nonstop. The road trip with Richard, the kids and the harried Cicely Tyson make for a nice story that grows on you, although the scenes following their arrival are weird and feel unrelated.

Usually Richard Pryor can be a bit much and definitely not family friendly but this movie was done so well and he shines in this. It also brought attention to the issue of foster children and how they can change by being loved.
