2.0 out of 5 stars Can't Get Into It
This is the first time i've ever heard Rick James, and I really don't like it as there are only a couple songs that I can get into. I assume that this is a Rick James Greatest Hits but theres nothing great about it.
My only favorite songs are Give It To Me Baby, Superfreak, and U Bring The Freak Out.
Thank God this isn't my cd, as I could've wasted $15.00

5.0 out of 5 stars funktastic!, September 11, 1999

as writer,arranger,producer,vocalist,etc.. in a fair world his talents would get far more love this two-disc set shows the power and complexity in the funk of Rick James. he is from my home town of buffalo,ny and to me the best artist to come from there. from You and I to the thumping bass of Mary Jane the mind-boggling duet with Lady soul Lady Teenia Marie on Fire and desire to standing on the top with the temps to the vibes of Roy ayers on dance wit me rick gives horns, bass, strings, flutes, and the mighty stone city band. his come and get it, street songs, throwin down, cold blood and Urban rapisody are must haves. he fell off a lot after 84 he really hit big with the Mary jane girl's, eddie murphy and the over-looked val young also process and the doo rags. but with urban rapisody he is back on his own records standing tall. while having hits with everyone else is cool there's nothing rick's own albums to groovy to and this set puts alot of things in check. the styles and his vision. he deserves some major props. cuz he played real music with real instruments unlike many of the busters of todays music.

All his good stuff.I always liked "Hollywood" from his first LP
but it was not included on this cd.Rick is a gifted vocalist
and musician who new how to get a party going. The cd also includes an informative booklet that gives a bio and background on songs and bandmates.
Listen to his version of Michael Henderson's "Starship", a real
show stopper!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Indeed, The Very Best!", July 13, 2009
This review is from: Bustin Out: Very Best of (Audio CD)
Being a long time Rick James fan, I consider myself an authority when it comes to the best of the 'Punk-Funk King's' catalog. I purchased the "Anthology" CD and although this collection consisted of 28 of Rick's finest recordings, there were still some tracks that in my opinion, were too essential to be excluded from a Rick James compilation. Well, the tracks that were missing from the "Anthology" I've found in "Bustin' Out: The Very Best Of Rick James"..."Ghetto Life" (which is one of Rick's most powerful musical statements) "Dream Maker" (one of the most soulful ballads from Rick's early career) the full length version of "17" and a version of "You Are My Starship" that rivals Norman Conner's version. Between the 2 of these compilations "Bustin' Out" is the more comprehensive overview of this most accomplished and complex musical artist. R.I.P.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gifted musical genius., November 12, 2007
This review is from: Bustin Out: Very Best of (Audio CD)
Rick James definitely bought something different to the music industry some 30 years ago in a good way of course. This is about as good as it gets far as a greatest hits collection goes with this man. But i still feel like the true music fans of this artist, including myself is being cheated a little bit. Why don't Motown stop jiving around and go ahead on and release Rick James other individual albums on cd. Can you say stuff like "Fire it Up, Garden of Love, Throwin' Down, Cold Blooded and Reflections". This were some very nice recordings by the 80's funk master. Rick James was a true musical genius and his songs will forever live on. Do the right thing and release those mentioned titles above.

A Good Collection by Mr. James. My standout song in this collection is the song, "You and I" (8:03 - extended cut!). I've admired Rick James work for many years, buy never bought any...until this disc! Four stars!!

the best of rick if you want freak funk come here, mary jane is the all time weed smokers anthemn, sampled to death, rick sang of his life of partying, groupies, drugs, and just plain old fun. unfortunately this was what caused rick to fade away in the 80's his freaky habits. but like i said this is a good collection of his greatest hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars The King of Punk Funk !, May 3, 2000

Rick James does not get the credit he deserves. In the early 80's, he was the MAN ! No one could get close to his funk. At the time, it seemed like he could do no wrong....

The first CD is far better than the latter one, and contains most of James' hits. It was great to see that he included something from Lovegun, but I wanted more. (That's what I get for being greedy) If you like funk (or rap for that matter), grab this CD !

This compilation was pretty comprehensive. Although I would have included
some other songs, it was overall a good effort.
