Editorial Reviews

Review

Mark Langan has written a book that gives rare insight into his career of busting Omaha s worst gang members and drug dealers. Marvelously detailed, this book reads like fiction yet every bit of it is true. --Eric Buske - Former Police Chief, now Police Chief in Bryan, Texas

Nobody knows this crime territory better than Mark Langan. His authentic experience proves that he is an expert in telling a story worth listening to. --Alex Kava, NY Times Bestselling Crime Novelist

Easy read, as told by a great story teller. Upon opening the book you are instantly immersed in the underground world that most of us only know from novels, movies or television.
Reading a first account depiction of the real thing, learning about the real-life characters and participants, allows you to get a new perspective and insight, and gives a real face and place to events and the people involved in them.
Once you start, it is almost impossible to put it down.
I would highly recommend this book to all my friends and family.

This book was an excellent read that gave an insight both professionally and personally from a respected officer of the law. This book made the reader feel the emotions of many different situations of law enforcement. I enjoyed how he made you feel like you were sitting in the police car next to him or in the alley looking for the bad buys. I definitely have more respect for those that wear blue. I recommend this read to any one who deals with law enforcement as I think there is a lot in this book that many people can learn from. I gave it 5 stars because I liked how the outline of the book kept you guessing on what was happening next and how things came full circle for this respected officer. I also enjoyed the pictures that was in the book that helped the reader get a better perception of the stories that were told.

My Dad introduced me to Mark Langan several years ago at his Rotary Club meeting at the Nebraska Humane Society because Dad knew Mark was a personal hero of mine. I’ve since been fortunate to meet Mark’s very kind wife and their wonderful dog Laci, and I make sure to say “hi” to Mark whenever I see him at Nebraska Humane Society events.

In my mind, this tough but kind former cop had personally climbed the front porch stairs of every dog fighting scum bag in Omaha and surrounding areas, pulling the bad guys out of the houses and tossing them to waiting cops, then taking his team of equally tough humane society officers into the dark basements of those houses, tucking a Pit Bull under each arm and emerging into the sunlight, rescuing all of the fighting dogs and bait dogs there were until the crime of dog fighting – along with all of the “partner” crimes that go with it – drug dealing, illegal gambling and the like – were just an embarrassing, horrible memory in our community, and all of the rescued dogs were safe in living rooms across Omaha.

I do not know if that is exactly what happened – probably not since I made it up, but – I do know dog fighting is much less common around here – not because bad guys became good, but because Mark Langan led the Nebraska Humane Society – Omaha Police teamwork that ended the horrible practice of dog fighting – not only here in Omaha but also helping shut down a dog fighting ring that spanned much of the country.

So I made up HOW it happened, but I promise you, Mark is that cool. The book Busting Bad Guys covers the time span BEFORE Mark was Vice President for Field Operations for the Nebraska Humane Society, the twenty-six years he was a cop and detective serving Omaha.

I find this book to be a good read. It is interesting. I have met this author and he is a good person has done a lot of good things not only for the city of Omaha but also for the animals of Nebraska. I volunteer at the Nebraska humane society where Mark is a vice president. Mark is a no nonsense type of guy but he truly cares for animals and has taken steps to help the animal owners be within the law while keeping their beloved pets

I first became aware of Mark Langan’s new book, Busting Bad Guys, in an email promoting a book signing as a Nebraska Humane Society fundraiser. Although, I was unable to attend the book signing, I was still very interested in the book - so glad I read it. When he started working for the OPD in 1978 at age eighteen, he was the youngest police officer ever hired. His book is a quick and enjoyable read detailing his career from the patrol days through assignments in the burglary, vice, and narcotics units. Mark’s book reads as if you’re sitting across the booth from him at Leo’s Diner in Benson, one of his favorite eating establishments, listening to his stories of days on the force. It’s obvious that he loved being a police officer and now brings his law enforcement experience to the NHS where he helps investigate crimes involving animals. More information can be found at the website of the same name.

This book is a must read for anyone who wishes to see what it is like to be one of the very few who are brave enough to put their life on the line to protect their community. Or for those who are just looking to hear to some new fun stories that can only be told by a cop who has seen just about anything there is to see, here you go! As they say, you just can't make this s***up!

The stories in this book snag your attention immediately, I could not put it down. I spent a few nights staying up way best my bedtime just to take in a few more pages, followed by a few more, and then a few more. I was laughing at some, and was on the edge of my seat during others. This book also takes you onto an emotional rollercoaster of events that no Police Officer wants to experience during their careers, but unfortunately, many do.

The stories and details Mark Langan shares just go to show what a professional and dedicated officer he was. Many can, and should, learn from him.
