Raney last recording. This has a very nice sound/easy feel,

This is Raney's last recording and he sounds so good. The lines just flow. While there are no "major riffs" here the music just moves along, with the swinging being very easy. The Way You Look Tonight is very good. Nothing really special, just another fine Raney record.

A number of years ago I heard a Jimmy Raney recording playing as background music in a store and felt that this was the perfect expression of jazz guitar. The trouble was I didn't know who it was or have any way to find out. Then I bought this CD and my quest had ended, it was unmistakably the same artist.
There is some great chord work here, tasteful and refined but never boring. The solos are inventive and melodic. Because it is a trio setting with guitar, bass and drums there is plenty of room for everyone on the recording to stretch out. For those not familiar with Jimmy Rainey's style I would submit the suggestion that he is somewhat like Jim Hall though perhaps somewhat more energetic in presentation. Jimmy Raney's playing is so tasteful, sensitive and warm that it can't be beat. I would write more but I think that I will pawn my computer and buy more Jimmy Raney CDs with the proceeds.

a great album,
This review is from: But Beautiful (Audio CD)
Of the CDs available of Jimmy Raney, this is my favorite. His trio really swings, and he fills the sound with his trademark rapid arpeggios. The song Indian Summer is very sweet.
