Wanna hear brilliant bop?, September 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: But Beautiful (Audio CD)
Lew Soloff plays true straightahead here, backed up by magnificent personnel (Kenny Kirland, Richard Davis, Elvin Jones). Recorded at the Clinton Studios, the sound is expansive.
Kirkland's sweet dissonant chords and often unpredictable abstracted phrasings and line reharmonizations never fail to amaze me; I wonder if Soloff did other albums with him? I was just telling myself that Kirkland better not go away when I got hold of Terence Blanchard's Jazz In Film and read that it was dedicated to his memory. For me, good jazz is playing out of the chords. Kirkland shines here; they all do.
