Its a Zoo In there!!,
By Sara Martin (Bay City, MI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: But No Elephants (A Parents Magazine Read Aloud Original) (Library Binding)
Grandma Tildy is a sweet lady who loves everyone and everything except elephants. Well one day a salesman came along and tried to sell he some animals, she bought them all except the elephant. This story is about the elephant that Grandma Tildy didn't buy. It ended up that the salesman left the elephant at her house over the winter until she went soft and brought him in. The elephant got hungry one night and ate all of Grandma Tildy's food. Grandma Tildy got very angry but in the end the elephant takes Grandma Tidly and all her pets to a warm and sunny place. And now Grandma Tildy loves her pet elephant.

A delightful book with a wonderful moral,

I can't believe the publishers let this book go out of print! We discovered this book at a yard sale when our oldest daughter was three, and it immediately became one of her (and my) favorite books. Other reviewers have explained some of the book's charm; what I want to add is that it beautifully shows the value of kindness and the unexpected ways that different individuals can help one another, without being heavy-handed or preachy. In addition, Jerry Smath's illustrations are priceless--richly, subtly humorous, nicely complementing the simple, easy-to-read text.

I have to agree with all of the other reviews I've read - this is a fantastic book. I loved it when I was a kid and just recently found it at a garage sale. My 19 month old boy loves it and will listen to it over and over again.

When I was a kid, I remember loving several books. The Curious George books and 'But No Elephants!' My favorite was Elephants. I still have this book and just ran across it in a box. I am 24 now and still look back fondly at this book.

Great Read Aloud Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: But No Elephants (Hardcover)
This book is awesome. I got our copy at a used book store for $.25 and wish it was not out of print. It's simple enough for a 2-year-old to understand, yet silly enough for a roomful of 6-year-olds to enjoy. Any child or group of children that you read this aloud to will enjoy chanting (or shouting!), "But no elephants!" along with Grandma Tildy, over and over.

This book is a "grandchildren" favorite. It is the story of Grandma Tildy and the joy she experienced through her sharing and caring. A happily ever after story. Great lessons for the reader/listener.

The Best Children's Book,
By Jann Coil (West Jordan, Utah USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: But No Elephants (Hardcover)
I love this book. When I was little I used to ask my parents to read it to me all the time. I am thirteen and I still love reading this book.I would recommend this book to children. It has many neat pictures and that makes the book alot more interesting to children.I bet that many people have heard of this book. Many people may have already read it.This book reminds me of another book that I have read. The book is called "Walk Two Moons." "Walk Two Moons" and "But No Elephants" have almost the same baseline. The baseline is that don't say you don't like something when you don't even know what it's like. The summary of "But No Elephants"is that a grandma finally agrees to take an unwanted elephant into her home but soon regrets her decision. At the end of the story, she realizes that elephants are not very bad and learns to love them.

This Book Will Become a Family Classic,

But No Elephants (Once Upon a Time)
I had to read this story EVERY NIGHT until the book fell apart, and I LOVED every minute of it! This is a beautiful story of how one's heart can soften over time - and is now a classic family favorite. Shame on whoever decided to let this go out of print. I just bought three more, while I can still get them. 1 for each of my children to read to their kids (and they're not even born yet!) and one to donate to my local elementary school. Hopefully, that way hundreds of kids will get the same enjoyment as we have over the years. Long live Grandma Tildy!! :-)

Still a hit after all these years!,

This was one of my very favorite books as a child and all these years later (I'm 25 now), my mother will still occasionally call and ask if I'd like to buy an elephant! :)
A great book that I can't wait to share with my children one day. I had several of these "Parents Magazine Press" books as a child and they were all wonderful.

Still quoted at our house,
By

Even with our children now in high school, college, and beyond, this book is still quoted at family gatherings. At the dinner table when someone is asked if they would like more roast beef (or salad, or whatever) a frequent response is "well, OK, but no elephants!" I recently purchased this book for my college-bound son as a graduation gift because he has such fond memories of reading it and having it read to him as a youngster. If you haven't read it, you're missing out on a real gem.
