Excellent Memoir of a Rolling Stone Reporter!,

This review is from: But Enough About Me: A Jersey Girl's Unlikely Adventures Among the Absurdly Famous (Hardcover)
Jancee Dunn's book, But Enough About Me, is an engaging account of her life as a writer for Rolling Stone magazine, as well as the time she spent as a veejay for MTV2 and reporter for Good Morning America. Dunn chronicles how she managed to get one of the world's best jobs, and she shares lots of details about meeting the rich and famous. The chapters alternate between her personal memoirs and accounts of some of the interesting interviews she has conducted. Ms. Dunn does a nice dance of sharing just enough information without giving away too much of her clients' musings, and her name-dropping is fun in an unpretentious way. This is a fast, enjoyable read, and anyone with any interest in entertainment personalities will enjoy it immensely. Excellent writing with great stories! Recommended.

Humorous, self-deprecating memoir with loads of juicy celeb gossip and musings about the fabulous life,

I can't praise this book highly enough - what a funny, interesting, informative read! Jancee Dunn alternates stories of growing up a New Jersey girl in a quirky family, with her experiences talking with celebs. A lot of the celeb experiences start out telling (in a tongue in cheek way) about what NOT to do when you meet a celeb, then going on to tell us a funny or embarrassing story about a meeting with a celeb she had.
It is part celebrity gossip, part hilarious and charming memoir, and part information on the psychology of stars and how to get good information out of them. I was fascinated on all levels and will be recommending this book highly to everyone I can.

I picked up this book to bring with me to the beach and am so glad I did! What fun! When Jancee writes about interviewing celebrities, she tells you what you want to know--what they wore, how nervous she was, how they look different in person, the awkward moments. Plus, the stories about her own life are surprisingly interesting. I read it in two days, which for me is some kind of record.

I picked up "But Enough About Me," figuring I'd read it down the shore on my family vacation. Only, I didn't get that far. Instead, I read it in three nights at home, giggling out loud and living vicariously through Jancee Dunn's very entertaining memoir of a "Rock Chick."
If, like me, you're a Jersey Girl and a writer, you'll especially appreciate Dunn's humor and well crafted stories. Yet this gem of a book is a great summer read for anyone who loves good writing, self depricating humor and an inside look at the lives of celebrities -- even if it never makes it into your beach bag.

Hysterical accounts of real life and the celebrities in between,
By Patrick Myers "Jazzy" (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: But Enough About Me: A Jersey Girl's Unlikely Adventures Among the Absurdly Famous (Hardcover)
But Enough About Me: A Jersey Girl's Unlikely Adventures Among the Absurdly Famous by Jancee Dunn is the first ever memoir I have attempted to read. After experiencing this gem of a work, I'm sure many more memoirs are to be read. Jancee Dunn takes her life and experiences and creates her story in every other chapter; whether she's going through her father's closet to see her Christmas presents or working out her dating troubles between friends and family, it will keep the reader entertained and ready to read more.
Written in first person narrative, her accounts of her own life give plenty of laughs, and the celebrity stories involving such characters as Dolly Parton and Madonna are so absurd yet so entertaining at the same time that I wonder how Jancee Dunn ever managed not to break out laughing [of course, everything is funnier looking back...]. How her life and work were separated yet so tied together at the same time still astounds me after I had read it, and the "characters" involved helped the story fresh and entertaining. This memoir written by Jancee Dunn is hysterical and touching in parts, showing what a real family acts like and how trying to get an interview with Cher will get you the jealous evil eye of fellow journalists. A perfect score of 5 stars, and the money you'll spend on this book? Invested wisely, my friend. Invested wisely.

Grabbed this book off the advance reading copy shelf at the bookstore I work at, and I'm so glad I did. Anyone interested in pop culture will enjoy this book. I love how Jancee intertwined her life growing up with her life as a celebrity reporter for Rolling Stone, MTV2, etc. I was laughing out loud at parts because it reminded me of growing up with my brother and sister, especially her attempts to get rid of her junk by selling it off to her younger sisters, and her and her sister dancing around with their Sweatworks sweatsuits. I also enjoyed reading about her visits to celebrity homes and her interaction with the Olsen twins. Great reading from a normal girl, who strived to be a little bit rock n' roll.

Warm & Funny Read,

What I liked best about this book is that Dunn always comes off as just a regular girl, the kind you'd want for a friend, who is suddenly hanging out with stars. Her hands are sweating, she's calling her sister from rockers' bathrooms asking for advice, she's trying not to let anyone catch on that she's normal.
I think Dunn's time as a reporter gave her a really clean, pleasant writing style. Her prose just flows.

I knew Jancee a million years ago when I was an editor at US, she was part of the cool, smart, funny, hip RS crowd we shared offices with.
Having just finished her book, I see that in addition to being a great writer, she really IS cool, smart, funny and hip. If you have ever wondered what it's like to work in the trenches of celebrity journalism (mostly fun, I can assure you), you will love this book. Jancee has a keen eye for detail and you will love her interactions with the famous and near famous, the well behaved and ill-behaved... her evening with Barry White is practically worth the price of the book... I am buying this one for all my friends, and if I could, I would give it 10 stars.

Oh how I did not want this book to end. I cannot say enough about how much I loved Ms. Dunn's career anecdotes, but even more I completely adored the passages about her family. She made me wish I had been the fourth sister, and her love of her parents and sisters was made obvious in every detail about them.
Funny, amazing, remarkable and poignant, this book has it all. My favorite book of the summer. |
