5.0 out of 5 stars Author shares experience and hope.
Because eating disorders are often part of a very secretive lifestyle, many of us are clueless to the reality of the stuggles involved in dealing with the disease. Most of us know someone, perhaps someone we love, and have not truly understood. 1.0 out of 5 stars frustrating book no information save your money
This book is very well done you will be totally frustrated by the choices that she makes and the justifications that she has for them. It is obvious half way through the book that the author is just flying through life on the seat of her pants. One of the most interesting things is that she has basically accepted the desease and her condition. She totally blames many...

Because eating disorders are often part of a very secretive lifestyle, many of us are clueless to the reality of the stuggles involved in dealing with the disease. Most of us know someone, perhaps someone we love, and have not truly understood. This book is a detailed transcript often so troubling to read that I put it down only to absorb what I read and then so captivated by Lauren's struggle I had to continue. Although difficult for her to do, it is obvious she was inspired by her relatonship with the Lord to write this account of her illness. I applaud her courage and obedience and thank her for giving us the information she shared to help us help the victims of this tragedy in our paths. It is a book I have already passed on and recommended to several people. One young lady found hope in her struggle. That's what it's all about.God uses us in our weakness and even our illness to bring others to Him. This book is honestly written and a true account of the need for a relationship with Jesus Christ. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars But I'm Not A Bad Person, July 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: But I'm Not a Bad Person (Paperback)
One of my best friends has suffered from Graves disease and anorexia, and I never understood what she was going through until I read this book. I thought that when the thyroid was removed, she would immediately be better, and did not realize that it takes a long time and requires yearly blood tests and sometimes medication adjustments. I was judgemental, angry, and easily frustrated, and I regret it. Thank you, Lauren, for opening my eyes and heart so that I can be a better friend.

4.0 out of 5 stars anorexia/bulimia, June 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: But I'm Not a Bad Person (Paperback)
I was very pleased with this books content on anorexia and bulimia. The author gives very vivid descriptions of her disease that are sure to hit home with anyone-not just the sufferers themselves but women everywhere with body issues, as well as friends, family and loved ones. I recomend this book to anyone struggling with an eating disorder, and for those who havn't.

This book is very well done you will be totally frustrated by the choices that she makes and the justifications that she has for them. It is obvious half way through the book that the author is just flying through life on the seat of her pants. One of the most interesting things is that she has basically accepted the desease and her condition. She totally blames many of her episodes on her thyroid..........why this author has not gotten this condition straightened out is beyond me. Fixing hyperthyroidism is one of the easier problems to fix. She gives us an insite into her life by telling us about her tubal ligation at age 24 as well as her battles with an abusive spouse which she totally defends and goes back to........... i think that this book would be best for someone who really has a parent who totally does not understand why their kid does not want to get well.........lauren is obviously one of those patients. She advertises the fact that she is a respiratory tech and is in the medical field and can not seem to find anyone that is qualified to treat her hyperthroidism...........obviously she is totally not interested in getting well.......it is obvious that she has not figured out how to get well in fact , there are some passages that make me thing that she is grasping to embrase the disease. I applaud her for being truthful and not wrapping the book together as one happy textbook ending.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth reading, July 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: But I'm Not a Bad Person (Paperback)
This book is choppy and repetitive; I found it to be very poorly written. I am a recovering anorexic/bulimic and although her story is intriguing, she has no business being a writer. With so many books available on eating disorders, I advise people to pass on this one. A better choice would be "Wasted" by Marya Hornbacher or "Early Disorder" by Rebecca Josephs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true life experience, November 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: But I'm Not a Bad Person (Paperback)
In reading this book, it is so much more than that, more than a book. It is someone's life and her battle against eating disorders as well as other medical diagnoses, her feelings, actions, reactions from the difficult time of "teenagerhood" through adulthood. It gives insights to those of us who know someone fighting this battle. As well as gives us hopes of triumph. Lauren writes in a very matter of fact language, not holding anything back to assure the reader that she is telling the whole story, no matter how unpleasant it might be at times. I believe anyone who is fighting this battle would be glad to see Lauren's words, her life, in print. I imagine it might take some of the loneliness away from others who are battling daily. Lauren brings up an important medical aspect in her book which really needs to be further researched...the correlation between thyroid problems and eating disorders. Most importantly, Lauren shows her commitment to beating the Beast which I believe will help others to get the strength for the battle, be it through religion or whatever means they should chose...Lauren proves there are victories.

4.0 out of 5 stars I could really feel her pain, November 6, 2000
This review is from: But I'm Not a Bad Person (Paperback)
I bought this book because I heard how honest the author was in it. I was so moved by her honesty, I had to put it down at times because the words were so powerful. The way she and her husband worked through it with the Lord was so moving. What a wonderful testimony for the Lord in their lives. She has beared her soul in this book and I admire her for that.
