Editorial Reviews

Review

But What About Me! Should be read by all parents who are divorcing. Too often children in a divorcing family are misplaced, and their feelings are not considered as part of the entire picture Parents are so tangled up in their own world of anger and the urge to win and punish that they quite often ignore their childrens emotional needs. But What About Me! is an excellent example for parents to read a positive guide for divorcing parents. -- Jack E. Hunter, Judge, 94th District Court, Nueces County, Texas

ButWhat About Me! has become an important part of the small exclusive library that proudly sits behind my desk.

The directness and simplicity of Bonnie Doss words, and illustrations as well, invite readers of any age to journey through their own experiences with divorce, separation and conflict. The writing exudes the energy and commitment of its author. But What About Me! is a teaching tool for adults willing to be enlightened by the issues of the child. The book bridges the generation gap. -- Janice Morganroth, Matrimonial Lawyer & Advocate for Children in Divorce, Birmingham, Michigan

In working with young children in the field of education, I have found it very difficult to find material that has been developed for use with children that is actually written on a childs level. Many of the problems encountered as an educator to troubled children are a direct result of discord between the parents and their inability to hear their children. The expressions and emotions presented here can enable a young child to find his/her own words to identify his/her feelings -- Joyce Spindle, Ph. D., Founder, Corpus Christi Counseling And Learning Center --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Publisher

Bonnie Doss reveals her love for children not only in her writing but through her long history of befriending and assisting youngsters of all walks of life. Her ability to connect with young children is uncanny. In But... What About Me! she shows her talent for being able to articulate for children the thoughts and concerns they feel. The child-like language and simplistic illustrations are invaluable in gaining a better understanding of youngsters who have been in or are currently going through the divorce or separation of their parents. This book is powerful and enlightening and truly speaks from the child's perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've learned how my children show & feel their own emotions, February 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: But... What About Me! (How it Feels to be a Kid in Divorce) (What About Me series) (Paperback)
I am a single mother of two, recently divorced. In reading this book, it reminded me of how much my children were hurting during the divorce and still are hurting now, even after the divorce. "But... What About Me!" demonstrates how important it is for us as parents to recognize and acknowledge our children's feelings during and even after divorce, so that they don't take the load of responsibility that was never intended for them to carry. Certainly, "But... What About Me!" touched my heart.

My original feeling was that this book would be a great book to read to my children. I felt that it would help open the lines of communication between children and their parents during and after divorce. But now that I have read this book to my sons, I have a much deeper appreciation for its content and simplicity.

Each day when I come home from work, my older son, age 6, meets me at the door with the book asking me to read it to him. He now uses the words "But... what about me" when he is feeling insecure about where he is emotionally and what's happening to and around him. The words and illustrations which obviously offer him comfort seem to have made this book his "best friend." For me, it has opened up a wonderful opportunity to spend real quality time with my children and really learn how they are feeling on many different levels. As a result of our time together with this book, I've learned about how they show and feel insecurity, sadness, fear and loneliness - things I didn't see or understand before. I cherish the new understanding and closeness this book has provided to my children and me.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has been an inspiration to me as a single parent!, November 26, 1998

This review is from: But... What About Me! (How it Feels to be a Kid in Divorce) (What About Me series) (Paperback)
I am so enthused that I finally found a book that can relate to me as a parent going through a divorce myself and that helps me to understand what my child is going through. My parents also divorced when I was younger I wish they had the opportunity to read this book. Maybe they could've understood how hurt I was while all of this was happening. They only thought of themselves when they were divorcing, this book reminds us that the children's feelings are also at stake. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is divorced or is going through a divorce with children , I also encourage young people that are with children to read this book. It has been a real inspiration to my dealing with my child and our relationship.

5.0 out of 5 stars A read for any parent considering divorce, May 22, 2000
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and found it very enlightening. As a person with several friends in the various stages of the divorce process, I felt compelled to give this book a read-through. I was impressed by how both the writing and the illustrations were done with an emphasis on the child reader. As a result, I purchased several copies for friends, as well as, a copy for a local crisis center. As a person who has never gone through the pain of a parents' divorce, the book also gave me a new perspective on what really happens to a family when a marriage ends. I recommend any parent who might be just only "considering" a divorce or even a separation make it a point to read this book and then take the next step by sharing it with their child(ren).
