THE SPIRIT OF JELLY ROLL,
By
This review is from: Butch Thompson Plays Jelly Roll Morton Solos (Audio CD)
These recordings date from 1968, when Butch Thompson was just 25, and the extent to which he succeeded in capturing the spirit of Morton's playing is quite remarkable. Some of these numbers were never recorded by Morton other than with his band, so it's fascinating to hear tunes such as Jungle Blues and Black Bottom Stomp transcribed for the solo piano. My only criticism is that playing time just tips the scales at a tad over three quarters of an hour.
