5.0 out of 5 stars 2 thumbs way up!
I want to give a review without giving any of the story details, since it is a mystery and I don't want to ruin the story for you people.
Basically it's a story about 2 private investigators, Kerry and Terry McAfee. They just happen to be identical, downt to the freckles, twin sisters. Kerry is the 'good girl' smarty who loves to learn. Terry is the opposite. She's...

1.0 out of 5 stars very disappointed!
I have had intractable migraines for the last seven years, so almost all of my time is spent in bed, reading. As a result, I am always looking for mysteries that are light-hearted and funny; about all I can tolerate in my life right now are happy endings. Based on the reviews I read, I ordered The Butcher of Beverly Hills, mainly because of the comparison to the...

She's the 'bad girl' who spent time in jail and who's had a 'nose candy' addiction in the past. Both girls are highly loveable characters. They are quick witted, funny, sarcastic and smart. Everything you want in a female heroin.
It was fun to watch these twins unravel the mystery of the butcher of Beverly Hills. I love how the author wrote the story and how everything comes together in the end. This book is definetly one you dont want to pass up! I'm looking forward to reading her next novel, The Mangler of Malibu Canyon.
Keep on writing Jennifer Colt. I would love to see more to this series!

5.0 out of 5 stars A mystery for gen X and Y, April 7, 2006
This review is from: The Butcher of Beverly Hills: A Novel (Paperback)
A great book with hysterical characters. The twin sisters who are the detectives in the book cause more chaos than and three Stephanie Plum's. If you like Evanovich you will love this book. Also look at books by Robert Eversz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by "BUTCHER"- Book is fast paced funny and fresh, November 11, 2006

This review is from: The Butcher of Beverly Hills: A Novel (Paperback)
I typically am not attracted to books that have "slasher" word's in the titles... but this series is an marked exception. You have to read the premise and know the butcher is not a crazed body parts collecter... but a plastic surgeon. This is where the fun begins. Twins with amusingly opposite personalities combine to make an unlikely but hilarious private eye team. They are surrounded by a very broad spectrum of colorful characters and the scenarios just keep pulling you ahead page by amusing page. If I didn't know there was a sequel right behind it I might have savored it and read over a day or two but I read it in one sitting. So much for delayed gratification ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars One Hell of a Romp, April 26, 2006

Rebecca N. (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Butcher of Beverly Hills: A Novel (Paperback)
I absolutely LOVED this book. Such smart, original writing. Colt does an excellent job of describing the L.A. scene (reminds me of how Carl Hiaasen so perfectly puts the read in Florida) and her obsessively self-absorbed characters (read Robert and Reba) are hysterical. I found my self laughing out loud on page after page -- to the point where people were starting to stare at me at the coffee shop. The plot is outrageous and totally over-the-top, but the perfect vehicle for her characters to shine through. I enjoyed every minute of this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The McAfee Twins are Great Fun, January 29, 2006
This review is from: The Butcher of Beverly Hills: A Novel (Paperback)
A hilarious, over-caffeinated romp through Beverly Hills craziness. This book had me laughing out loud in a dozen places. It reminded me of Carl Hiassen's satirical novels of Florida's screwball characters. From rich Aunt Reba, who thinks nothing of paying $3000 for a designer handbag, to Eli, California's worst-dressed attorney, to crooked plastic surgeons, Barbie-doll perfect models, security guards who get more than they bargained for and cowboy-booted female cops -- Colt takes us on a wild, entertaining ride.

Bring it on your next flight, enjoy it on your next vacation, or just read it at home for a funny break from office stress. I have already ordered her next novel. Keep 'em coming Jennifer! (I wonder who will play Aunt Reba in the I-hope-to-see movie?)

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this before going to a plastic surgeon!, September 1, 2005
This review is from: The Butcher of Beverly Hills: A Novel (Paperback)
I loved this book! It was a fun & fast read with lots of excitement and "who done it" questions that will keep you very entertained! Every time you think you have figuered it out, Jennifer Colt throws you for a loop.

The story revolves around two crazy twins, Kerry & Terry who own their own private detective agency. While doing an investigation, they stumble across a serial killer who is murdering Beverly Hill's most prominent people and it's up to them to uncover the truth before they are the killer's next victims.

I can't wait to read The Mangler of Malibu Canyon due out January 2006!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jennnifer Colt is now on my must-read list!, June 1, 2007
This review is from: The Butcher of Beverly Hills: A Novel (Paperback)
This book was a delight from start to finish. The mystery was labrynthine and surprising all the way to the end, the characters were hilarious and well-drawn, and the writing was top-notch. If I had to make a comparison, I'd say it's very Evanovich-like. Yet I didn't feel as if the author was trying to copy--it feels like an original, laugh-out-loud creation to me, and I can't wait to read the rest in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected fun!, December 28, 2005
This review is from: The Butcher of Beverly Hills: A Novel (Paperback)
I was not expecting this book to be this funny or entertaining but it sure is! Imagine hot looking twin private eyes riding a Harley to do their investigating and finding themselves with a little more than they bargained for each time. Calling these 2 girls twins is almost funny as they may be described as identical but their personalities couldn't be more opposite or maybe they're more alike then they'd like to admit. Either way it makes for a fun read as they take on a case from a rich woman who like her many friends have way too much money and time on their hands. Their little well kept secrets lead them all into trouble. Hilarious characters throughout along with a dog that makes me want to name one of my pets Paquito. Love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars droll, very droll, September 15, 2005
This review is from: The Butcher of Beverly Hills: A Novel (Paperback)
This is a well written mystery, with great characters, snappy dialogue, and a good story line. The backdrop is accurate - the roads and neighborhoods are all right, and Canter's does have wonderful food and interesting people.

You start with twin redheaded sisters, each the complimentary opposite of the other. Add in some society types and a murder or two, and you're well on your way to a good read. Then top the whole thing off with a dose of dry humor - and some broad comedy, on occasion - and you've got a really great book.

If Kerry and Terry keep it up, they may find themselves in the midst of a long running series of adventures, and I look forward to every single one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stephanie Plum times 2, August 26, 2008
This review is from: The Butcher of Beverly Hills: A Novel (Paperback)
Twin private investigators in L.A. and a zany cast of characters from Beverly Hills create a can't put it down crime and mystery novel. Your head will spin with all the craziness as Terry and Kerry work to solve the mystery in the land of plastic surgery, drugs and buckets of money. Aunt Reba, Eli and cousin Robert are all loveable characters that add to the mix. Throw in a couple of homeless pups and you have a really romping comedy/mystery. If you like Stephanie Plum, this book will appeal.
