Book Description

June 15, 2009
They call him Bird. He makes his living by understanding how Los Angeles operates after the sun goes down. When a French-Vietnamese transplant named Li Nguyen approaches Bird and asks him to protect her sister Song from a jealous boyfriend, Bird reluctantly agrees. But it doesn't take long for Bird to realize that Song's troubles go much deeper than a little domestic dispute. As the bodies start to pile up, Bird finds himself trapped in a labyrinth of familial rivalries and resentments. From the mean streets of Los Angeles to the slums of Honolulu, it will take all of Bird's cunning to avoid meeting his own bloody fate.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Readers who like gritty, hard-boiled yarns will welcome Michael Lion's THE BUTCHER'S GRANDDAUGHTER. The fast action and twisting plot features 'Bird,' and information-broker drawn into a Chinese puzzle of Asian gangs, human greed, and casual death. It's a fine debut for Lion and for his protagonist who is in love with 'the smog and the garbage and the poverty and the traffic and the noise' of the underside of Los Angeles. L.A noir hasn't been done any better." --Rex Burns, Egar Award-winning author of THE LEANING LAND

Review

"Are you nostalgic for a detective hero in the Chandler mode, a 'complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man'? Then Michael Lion's Bird is your guy. But his adventures in Lion's timeless, dangerous, alluring world are in no danger of inducing the been there-done that sensation. No déjà vu for his readers: the feeling they will experience (when not consumed by anxiety for Bird's survival) is delight."

5.0 out of 5 stars From the Shadows..., June 16, 2009

...Comes Bird, a man who means it and doesn't apologize. Perfectly romantic and perfectly heartless, your protagonist negotiates the shadows with wit and charm. Lion's first will keep your warm when you need a jacket, and feed ya, like a sandwich.

5.0 out of 5 stars L.A noir rocks, June 16, 2009

Michael Lion's debut novel should be on the shortlist of any crime fiction aficionado. Lion creates an atmosphere dripping with dread. The protagonist, Bird, has enough morality to make him likeable, and enough of an edge to make him interesting. Fans of Raymond Chandler will enjoy this modern take on sun-baked Los Angeles. The novel was released by a new publishing outfit called New Pulp Press. They've produced some interesting crime fiction, especially for those of us who have gotten bored of the same generic mysteries and crime capers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read, October 21, 2009

Lion captures the crime genera bringing his characters to life on the dark streets of LA and HNL. Complicated and captivating-when is the next Bird novel coming out?
