I ordered a box of these from Butler and made our first meal with them last night. I rehydrated them per the package directions with 4 1/2 cups warm water with about a 1/2 cup BBQ sauce, for flavor, stirred in for 10 minutes. Then I drained them, carefully pressing out the excess water. Moved them to a pan and simmered with remaining BBQ sauce (what was left from the bottle - about 3/4 cup) for about 20 minutes. Served them on crusty hoagies. YUM! The texture was SPOT ON.

These are the best vegan meat replacement I've had since becoming vegetarian. If I had to say one negative about this product, it would be that they are pretty sauce/seasoning dependent (so you really need to get your sauce/seasoning right!). My normally picky vegetarian teen had two servings! These are definitely going to be a staple in our house!

I have not personally tried these Soy Curls, but I wanted to let everyone know that the Butler website sells them for 6 bags (8 oz.) for $19.95. That works out to $3.33 a bag.

Let me begin by stating that I am an off and on vegetarian. Raised as an omni, I became a veg-head after my first child was born - not by choice, but by necessity. It wasn't a bad experience as I have always liked vegetables, but I was used to having them share the spotlight with fish, chicken, beef, or pork. Fast forward 13 years and, though I do not eat fish, beef or pork and very seldom eat chicken, I often find myself craving the texture of it - chicken that is. (I do not crave fish, beef or pork but my craving for chicken causes me to pinch a piece or two off of my DH's plate at least twice monthly). Anyhoo...

I have tried to satisfy my cravings with various "fake meats" but it has never worked and, after a while, I became more concerned with the long list of ingredients on the side of the packaging than my cravings. Not only did these items NOT taste like the foods they were trying to mimic, they were off in texture and scent. So, back to a plate of veggies I went. Again, nothing bad here - Veggies, pasta, bean chili and veg sandwiches are da bomb - until you've had it too much. Then the bomb is in your tummy.

In an effort to try to come up with some new flavors, I searched the web for recipes. I happened across a seitan recipe and was ready to take the plunge until I happened to find Soy Curls (I really wasn't looking for a "homemade" seitan recipe anyways).

I found several sites with positive Soy Curls reviews and decided that I had to try it. I ordered my $8 bag...and waited.

Once received, I tried them the best way I could think of - fried! I hydrated the 1 cup of the pieces in no-chicken broth, battered (like normal chicken), then fried them. Guess what? These things are good - so good that my omni fam was asking for them.

my mother gave me a bag of these with the sweet & sour recipe. I made it and it was soooo good.
I love these curls. I was hoping they make other options. Well worth trying if you are vegetarian or Not.

Wow! This is a fake meat that's got the right texture. Since it is a soy analog, it really has no flavor on its own but marinated and seasoned, it is a wonder.

One of the few things that I've missed in the years since I gave up meat was, sad to say, pork in my split pea and black-eye bean soups. Since these were so light and an unexpected texture, when I got my first bag, I decided to experiment. I think that I've got my recipe pretty much down but for the tweakin'.

In a heat resistent bowl, Add:
1 cup Soy Curls
1 tablespoon Liquid Smoke
1/2 cube of Not-Beef Bouillion
1 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet
1 teaspoon Vegan Worchestershire Sauce
1 cup boiling water

Cover with foil and let sit. I actually have found that if I set this up for marinating, the flavor is so much better after a day or two so I cover it with a lid, after the water cools, and put it in the refridgerator. When I'm ready to use it, I chopped it up and add it to my soup. It's lovely.

Last night, testing my new Cuisinart Mini-Prep, I tossed some of the marinated Soy Curls into it and gave it a few pulses. Okay, I actually held the button down. It chopped up the Soy Curls quite nicely for flavoring the soup. (Opinion on the Cuisinart is still pending.)

Truthfully, this is the only way that I've used the Soy Curls thus far but I'm pretty jazzed. They'll be getting the BBQ sauce treatment anyday now and I expect that they'll taste just dandy that way and much, much better than the soy strip analogue that I used before.

Since my roommate brought home a bag of these, they've been eaten nearly daily in our house! They've got a great texture and can satisfy a meat eater without being so overly meat-like which might bother some vegans and vegetarians. We use them in stir-fry and fajitas, but I'm sure you could toss them in just about any recipe that would call for something meaty. We use Better Than Bullion No Chicken Base in the water and the curls soak the flavor right in to them. They're great. They're loved and eaten by the two vegans in our household AND by all of the meat-eating family and friends we have over!
