5.0 out of 5 stars Damn son
Great album. Harder and faster than other stuff by same people. Blew me away. "Butter of '69" is a great somg as mentioned in other reviews but far from the only one on the album. Great eclectic set of songs, there's something on there for everyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars decent disc not close to viva la woman
I really bought this cd for butter of 69. That's pretty much all i got. I like a few of the songs such as 9mm but I wouldn't get this cd just because you like viva la woman. This is a much harder sound and it doesn't have as many vocals. It has a lot of guitar and it is not very smooth. I am definetly glad to finally have butter of 69 because it's my favorite song.

I've been looking for this CD in record stores for a few years now after hearing it secondhand. A big fan of Cibo Matto, I thought this would be some thrown-together side project. Thank goodness I was wrong! It's one of my favorite albums ever. "9MM" and "Degobah" are insane rockers, while "Butter****er" is plodding but very catchy. Too bad Grand Royal went under and can't rerelease this classic.

Buy it. Odds are good that you'll love a few songs, hate a few songs, and spend hours trying to decide what you think of the rest. When I bought this disc (summer of '97) I hadn't had this much fun listening to an album in years. Just a truly novel sound, with songs that are surprisingly infectious and grooving. It's hard to pinpoint their sound, but be prepared to have these songs pop into your head without the slightest provocation. You've been warned.

4.0 out of 5 stars this is the work of pure genious, December 27, 1999
This review is from: Butter (Audio CD)
i also bought this album for "butter of 69" but not because i mistakenly took this for only cibo matto's work as the reviewer above does... because i heard the talent of all sorts of my favorites when i heard that song. the moment i heard the "butter of 69" song in my friend megan's car i recognized the bubbly vocals of the girls of cibo matto and then i realized who else was on this album... sean lennon, mike mills, a member of jon spencer's blues explosion... it is quite wonderful. the pumping guitars, the raw and bubbly vocals combine into a frightful yet beautiful masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE fot the Cibo Matto fan, September 8, 2006
By
This review is from: Butter (Audio CD)
This album is probably the singularly most fun album in the entire Cibo Matto opus. Featuring guys from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Skeleton Key and a cameo by Sean Lennon. Lots of different styles and influences. Very cool to hear the long-thought-dead New York punk sound coming back on "It's the Rage" -- who knew Miho could sing like that? Other highlights include the stoner-vibe of "How Do I Get High" and the weird combination of surf, swing, and spy on "Dick Serious". Lowest point is the aptly named "Mono Lisa", which is indeed just a loooooong pointless two-lyric drone-on. Yuka Honda's keyboards are really well incorporated into these tracks; absolutely nothing seems strange, out-of-place, or inaccessible. Probably the greatest side-band type of CD I've ever spent money on. Guaranteed to bring smiles...!

5.0 out of 5 stars too hard to find :(, January 24, 2005

It took me forever to find this CD.

Mona Lisa is my favorite song. A great CD for Cibbo Matto fans dying for anything they can get. Don't play any of these crazy used prices though not worth it.

14 bucks or less :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Post-Modernism at its best, March 20, 2000
This review is from: Butter (Audio CD)
Postmodern thought (mid-seventies to the present) relies heavilly on this particular aesthetic. The blurring and breaking down of stylistic barriers has produced some of the most unique sounding music imaginable. Enter Butter... Butter is a band that incorporates so many things into its sounds; Whether it's styles, instruments, or attitudes, they are predictably unpredictable. I first heard this record a few years ago and immediately was as confused as I was enthralled. The band stuck to no formula, and had no single message...they conjured sounds that at times were beautiful, while equally brutal and annoying. But this is precisely what makes them so amazing. They throw these sounds in the air with minimalistic songwriting, interesting sounds (courtesy of a strange array of keyboards, vocals, etc.) and a little bit of ego, giving us all a non-stop, sweet tasting, musical caserole of eclectica. With members of Cibo Matto, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and New York man-about-town Mike Mills, Butter will surely get into your head.
