This is a stronger release than some records in its vein, and Hudson Mohawke's chops are fierce. Also HM's range here is nice without being too left-field (which is kind of funny when you think how left-field this whole genre of music is). All that said, Hm's released better tracks on EPs and such, so when I came to this full-album effort I was left wanting a little. Sure, there are a few really strong tracks on here: "3.30" is bouncy and crunchy at once, "Gluetooth" has a nice groove going and even a vocal track like "Just Decided" isn't without its charms. But nothing on here pounds like previously released track "Overnight", which appears on an earlier EP.You can pick and choose on this one and score, but the whole album is probably best left for fans.

Best thing in music since DONUTS...It truly is a joy to feel like the only one that knows about really dope music. I still do hope that somehow people catch on if only for their own joy and sanity quite frankly. I'm embarrassed to have all these riches. Hudson Mohawke - Butter,
This review is from: Butter (Audio CD)
BUTTER is an unnatural creation -- but that's mostly a compliment. It has a frenetic kitchen-sink approach, with almost a nu-rave appeal to it. He pitches his samples until they squeak with pleasure and grounds everything with a heavy beat. He hits Prince with a psychedelic stick on "Joy Fantastic" and just gets chaotic trying to maintain a melody on "Fruit Touch." The soothing "Acoustic Lady" gives way to the sitar and drums of "Rising 5." There are so many ideas crammed in here that it's surprising they don't come oozing out of the side. And maybe that's part of the problem: too little focus. The tracks bounce from one thing to another, and while that makes for a fun ride, it just sometimes gets you lost. Still, you can't help but smile at "Velvet Peel" or bob along to "FUSE." The female vocals on "Allhot" are funky and creepy, all at the same time. All good fun.
