I have had migraines for over 20 years. I've tried many other items. The prescription meds I was taking had scary side-effects. I researched butterbur & felt it was a much safer alternative. I tried it and am very happy with it, it works! You have to give it a couple months, taking it faithfully, but it will then work. If I go several days now without taking it, I'll get a migraine. I've been taking it for over a year & 1/2 and am very thankful for this product. I've gone from 4-12 migraines a month to 2-4 a YEAR!

I had been taking a different butterbur product for a while but it is no longer in production. For a while I stopped taking any kind of butterbur but slowly my migraines came back till I was getting them almost daily. I went to the Dr and got a beta blocker-didn't do much but a friend noted that I wasn't taking butterbur anymore. (I didn't think about it) I decided to try Swanson's because of the price. The experiments that were done recommend 75mg morning and night so one pill this didn't quite cut it for me, but when I upped the dosage to 2 pills morning and night my migraines almost disappeared. (on the other products I was using 75mg. on one and on another product 100mg) For the reviewer who gave the product a one star, rarely do these products work in a week. you should really give them 2-3 months especially the first time you use them. And sometimes you do have to play a little with the dosage. It is really is worth the effort because when they work it is a nice relief.

I'm about to place my second order for this product. It worked for me, though it may not work for others. I've noticed a decline in allergy symptoms, headaches and migraines.

If you're looking to try this supplement, I would suggest trying this one because it is excellent quality and a good price to start out.

I've been taking this butterbur twice a day for about 5 weeks for help with my migraines. So far not much lessening in my migraines, and I've been experiencing too strong of side effects, which is an exhilarated feeling 24/7(!) thats been getting worse the longer I take it. It feels very simular to taking puffs on an albuterol inhaler(which I haven't done for 10 plus years for asthma), or like I've had 5 cups too much of strong coffee. And I've stopped drinking coffee(weaned off) and any chocolate. But no increased heart rate, so I'm not completely alarmed, but I cannot handle this feeling at all hours of the day and night. So, since I really want to give this herb a chance at working, I'm thinking I'll take a month off then try again with a lesser dose and see if I can get some migraine relief without this horrible feeling.

My husband just reminded me... I am usually the person who experiences side effects of medications, so if thats you too, maybe approach this herb with this knowledge.

This is a long review but I want to get this out there in case there are others like me with a similar history looking for relief.

My symptoms began just over 10 years ago. I developed an ongoing cough and runny nose--as many do--and was diagnosed as having allergies and prescribed the usual daily dose of antihistamines. Allegra, Claritin, etc. seemed to work for a while and then the allergies would intensify again and I'd switch to the next latest, greatest antihistamine. About five years into this process, I noticed that on my most congested days I was extremely irritable in the mornings. Only a strong cup of coffee and some ibuprofen seemed to alleviate the irritability. The grumpiness started to combine with sore neck/shoulder muscles, painful bumps in the back of the head, and intense headaches. I saw several doctors and the only treatment suggested was checking for a sinus infection, doing an allergy test and then beginning long-term allergy shots. The x-ray for the sinuses revealed nothing and the allergy tests gave the usual suspects of "pollen, pet dander and dust mites". The prospect of paying $20/visit multiple times a week to receive shots for multiple years was unattractive to me so I sought out alternate forms of relief such as acupuncture, massage and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In addition to changing up my diet and beginning a 5 day/week exercise program, I also made drastic changes to my house to minimize exposure to these elements. Yet nothing seemed to alleviate the allergies and the related headaches continued to get worse with each passing season. I started taking Sudafed OTC along with my antihistamines and noticed that the congestion went away. For over a year, I took Sudafed OTC with a combined antihistamine on an almost daily basis.

I have not had this product long enough to truly evaluate it as it does take some time to build up in the body before one notices the affects. Many reviewers give this product high marks which is why I purchased Swanson's Butterbur. The score I gave in this review relates to the price alone and nothing else. I bought this product through Amazon, the order was filled and shipped by Swanson's. After placing the order I went to Swanson's website to do a little more research and found the price there to be 1/3 of what Amazon is charging. I paid 9.49 per bottle here on Amazon and then discovered that the Swanson's website price for the same bottle, dosage and quantity is 3.39. I recommend buying direct from Swanson's!!! I will update this review later with comments about the products claims.

9 September 2013: This is an update to my first post; After 5 months of using this product I can now say that it works as advertised. Also true to what other commenters have said it does take a fair bit of time before one realizs that it is working. The dosage consumed is two tablets per day every day, I probably would have updated this post earlier but It just recently occurred to me that the frequency and the intensity of the migraines has definitely been reduced. On highly stressful days it is necessary to use some zomig but now this absurdly expensive prescription last a lot longer. I will recommend Butterbur to other migraine sufferers.
