Excellent kid's movie,
By Sarah Finley "Sarah" (Oak Harbor, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Buttercream Gang (DVD)
I first saw this movie when I was a kid. Family Feature Films or something like that used to be the only way to get this, as well as many other movies that my parents got for me. This particular movie is about a group of kids that have club called the Buttercream Gang that help others. One of their friends that left for the city awhile ago comes back to town very different. He steals, is mean to others, etc. Even though he starts to do mean things to his former friends, they never give up on him. He eventually goes back to the city and a few months later he writes to them and tells them that he started a club to help people there in the city. If parents are looking for a movie that teaches kids good lessons, this is a good one.

Words cannot express the essence and magnificence of this incredible motion picture. Seeing it for the first time on VHS as a young adolescent, I considered the movie to be rather humorous. The teenage boys dressed in rolled-up shorts and high socks and saying things like "Maybe you should look the word 'fun' up in the dictionary," can be viewed as funny to all ages. However, the message expressed in this tale of a struggling friendship outweighs any of the silly aspects. The main song that is played in a couple scenes throughout the movie is as equally vital and heart-warming; and supports the storyline perfectly. It's a movie everyone can relate to in some way. Seeing it at that age, I was very skeptical and judgemental. But something about it made me watch the Buttercream Gang again... and again. I showed it to my peers and eventually the movie became a classic masterpiece for both family and friends. I recently bought a used DVD copy and watched it for the first time in about 5 years ... and it was simply magnificent! Buy this movie today, watch it, put it in a locked cabinent for 3 months, and WATCH IT AGAIN. It will change your life.

funny movie with morals!,

This movie is wonderful. I loved that the boys were so helpful with the townspeople, even with their friend who turned to "other friends". This story of compassion and unconditional love, even amongst boys, is a great turning-of-age movie, appropriate for all ages. My seven-year-old loved it.

MAGIC. That is the first word that comes to my mind when I think back to the first time that I sat down to watch the Buttercream Gang well over a decade ago...the MAGIC has only grown brighter with every time that I have viewed it since. This movie deeply and intimately shaped my boyhood with the truths and virtues of friendship, forgiveness, redemption, and endless other great fruits of the soul, which seem to be unremorsefully slipping away in our present world. I am sad to see the negative reviews posted for this film. It only proves what the human soul has turned its back on within the ambitiously growing age of technology and "spiritless-ness". I have watched this movie seemingly infinite times since I was a boy (I pop it in the VCR as soon as Spring arrives every year), and even now, in the years of my manhood, the MAGIC is still ever so present. The heart of this story deeply shaped my own heart with these great and enchanting truths and challenged me as a young boy to be good to others and do my best in all that I do in life. Its simple and heart-gripping message is one that I shall take with me for all of my life. To the makers of this movie, I tip my hat and say thank you from the deepest part of my soul for bringing these lessons and adventures into my Home and the home of so many others (whom I am sure are very grateful as well). I have never forgotten what it means to be a Buttercreamer. (***Please release "THE BUTTERCREAM GANG" on DVD!!) :)

The ButterCream Gang,
This review is from: The Buttercream Gang (DVD)
The ButterCream Gang Scott, Pete, Eldon, and Larry share fun and friendship as the "ButterCream Gang". They live in a small town called Elkridge. The group is temporarily separated when Pete moves to Chicago for the school year. He joins a local gang, a pretty bad gang. When Pete returns to Elkridge, his friends notice he has changed. They were wondering what happened back in Chicago. As Pete struggles, old friendships are challenged and the boys learn the true meaning of unconditional love.
My opinion on this movie is that it teaches us to hang out with the right kind of people (gang), and be who you are. It is approximately 95 minutes long. I loved this movie and I hope you enjoy it too. I would recommend that you watch this movie because it will teach you responsibility and it may become your favorites. It is a great movie and I hope you enjoy it .

Dreams for a Better Day,
By Kathryn (Ohio, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Buttercream Gang [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I remember watching this movie over and over when I was younger, but I haven't watched it in years. I popped it in the other day, and was reminded of just how much I loved it. Sure, it may seem a little hokey compared to some of todays entertainment. It's a nice, "down home" story about kids growing up in a little town where everyone knows everyone. The boys are part of The Buttercream Gang, a group that's been around as long as the town. They're nice boys who help out in their community and have fun fishing, swimming, playing baseball, and riding their bikes. One of their friends moves away to Chicago, and comes back visibly changed. They suspect he might have been in a gang and try to help him out, show they still accept him. The movie gives a nice message about what unconditional love is, and how it's not that easy to love your enemies, but you should anyway. What's so wrong with that?? We need more movies like this, nice wholesome movies you can watch with your whole family. I would highly reccomend this movie to anyone, especially those looking for a movie they can watch with their kids. Some reviewers mentioned that their VHS was wearing out--"The Buttercream Gang" (and it's sequel) are both available on DVD-just go to the Feature Films for Families website: www.familytv.com

Better the second time around,

OK, so it's cheesy. It's lame at times. The first time I saw it, I thought, "Dumb!"
However, this movie gets better with time. It has heroes, damsels in distress, villians, great morals, and a idyllic view of small town Midwestern America (without the bitter Sinclair Lewis flavor). Now that I'm 10-12 years older, this is one of those feel-good movies that make you think, "I can do it!" And if the 'realism' of the ending bothers you, I really suggest you stay away from most TV in general.

quotehope,

I believe this video may not be the greatest technological advanced, but by no means is the point of the movie cheesy. The main character perservered with faith. His friend has a physical and spiritual journey, traveling far from home. I give this movie and its makers five stars in ministering to many who see this, causing the view to contemplate the strength of faith, "...The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1.
This movie starts in each of home towns and shows the desicion each of us face of what type of person we will choose to turn out to be. Pete goes to chicago, getting involved with the gangs, then visits back home and is violent because he is under conviction, and the "gang" back home that does good, not only does good works, but has faith that love never fails and they minister to pete, their old member who thinks he has outgrown the whole Jesus thing. But, ultimately discovers the power of brotherly love and totally surrenders and through the prayers of the buttercream gang, Pete's stony heart turns to flesh and discovers that God has always loved Him. I pray that there are many buttercream gangs out there, not going on good works alone, but that have strong faith. Always having appreciated movies that are based on true stories of life, I hope that people watch this and finds it is similar to their own story. Whether they fit in the character of Pete or the "hero/protagonist" It is a good movie to share with your own kids and to shine strong in the strength of Jesus, even when things are the hardest. My hope is that there are more inspired movie makers out there to make more films such as the buttercream gang to help raise this nation's new generation.

Eldon Flowers is my God,
By valerie purvin (indianapolis, indiana United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Buttercream Gang [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Throughout my viewing of this theatrical masterpiece, one thing remained clear. Eldon Flowers (Brandon Blaser) is my God. He is a man of many talents, good nature, and an all around ladies man. Although he was a little chunky around the midsection, his shenanigans, and hyjinks will be ever seared in to the canals of my memories and dreams. I never doubted for a second, that Eldon, and his robust physique, could have held up the physical portion of the Buttercream Gang. With his rough attitude, smooth talking, and looks to kill, he could have taken out the Blades single handedly. Scott was only holding him back, with his non-violence Gandhi like attitude. For if we all followed "An Eye for an Eye," we'd all be blind, but the man with one eye would rule.....and that man would be Eldon.
