5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful series!, December 28, 1999

My four-year-old son and I are both BIG fans of the First Discovery Book series. We own a handful of these books, and if finances would permit, we would own them all!

As for the Horn Book statement "The text is often difficult to read over the illustrations", I totally DISAGREE. It is a non-fiction picture book, consisting of a multitude of captions. The transparent pages are the main reasons we are drawn to these books. They in no way hinder the reading of the text.

5.0 out of 5 stars The second of this series I'd highly recommend, February 13, 2006
This review is from: Butterflies (First Discovery) (Spiral-bound)
This series is an imitation of the Eyewitness format for younger readers with see-through pages thrown in. I'd recommend it primarily to preschoolers.

Except for the wrong definition of moth vs. butterfly and a picture late in the book that implies that the hawkmoth (not the cicada) starts life underground, this is an excellent books with great information presented in a colorful, entertaining manner. It covers the diet, anatomy, and lifecycle of butterflies, as well as touching on the vast variety of species.
