My four-year-old son and I are both BIG fans of the First Discovery Book series. We own a handful of these books, and if finances would permit, we would own them all!As for the Horn Book statement "The text is often difficult to read over the illustrations", I totally DISAGREE. It is a non-fiction picture book, consisting of a multitude of captions. The transparent pages are the main reasons we are drawn to these books. They in no way hinder the reading of the text.

The second of this series I'd highly recommend,

This series is an imitation of the Eyewitness format for younger readers with see-through pages thrown in. I'd recommend it primarily to preschoolers.
Except for the wrong definition of moth vs. butterfly and a picture late in the book that implies that the hawkmoth (not the cicada) starts life underground, this is an excellent books with great information presented in a colorful, entertaining manner. It covers the diet, anatomy, and lifecycle of butterflies, as well as touching on the vast variety of species. |
