[Editor's Note: This is a combined review of BUTTERFLIES! and KITTENS!]--The Know-It-All series turns its attention to little girls, who are no doubt the audience for these two titles. From the sweet-voiced female narrator's voice to the harp string and twinkle-bell page-turn signals, the producers seem to have the fairer sex in mind. The narrator's voice is easy to follow, and she carefully breaks down words (like "met-a-mor-pho-sis") for listeners. A young child reads the sidebars and information buttons between the main narration. The books seem to be carefully researched, though the question of "how are kittens born?" is delicately sidestepped with a demure illustration and the answer "one at a time." When I purchased this book at a "half-price" bookstore, I thought "I can't go wrong for the price I paid." Boy, was I ever surprised. My $1.50 has gone a long way. My 4-year-old loves "reading" along with this book during trips. The information is presented clearly, succinctly and appropriate for his age. I even learned a few things about butterflies. It introduces the life cycle of the butterfly, explains metamorphosis and camouflage and gives lots of colorful examples. Great entertainment and instructional too!.
