5.0 out of 5 stars Nice, portable field book
A well put-together book, small enough to be carried to the field. Has excellent photos and the range maps are very useful. Information provided on each species is well written and very useful. The second half of the book has a wealth of information covering a diversity of butterfly subjects such as photographing them, raising them, gardening for them, and a wealth of...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...
I should have read the desciption, as opposed to the reviews only! It never occured to me that a guide for 2 1/4 states would only include 100 species. While there is good information in this book, I don't think it worth the price or my time. I was wanting another field guide to complement my Kaufman's. 5.0 out of 5 stars county maps are a real plus, September 11, 2010

The size, cover and page material is well suited for field use and constant thumbing. The maps which show counties, help to easily nail down where species would most likely be found. Muliple photos of upperside/underside colors - male/female forms helped to identify two female Eastern Tiger Swallowtails - one a black form and the other the yellow. The county maps show that I was very lucky to have even seen a Red-spotted Purple in my county. The habitat notes and listing of food plants are going to be very helpful to me in making selections for my butterfly garden.

While there is good information in this book, I don't think it worth the price or my time. I was wanting another field guide to complement my Kaufman's. That said, I do appreciate the section on butterfly hotspots and the checklists of varying areas. This strikes me as more of a great little beginners guide for a backyard gardner.
