The patterns are fun to do, with only three pieces in the Checkered White butterfly, and most of the butterflies having only five to nine pieces to applique. Many of the patterns have been simplified for ease of cutting and sewing; however, the author was true to the basic shape and the field markings of the species.

About the Author

Before Bea started quilting in the mid 1980s, she was not familiar with quilting in any form. However, she had a background in home economics. She also studied weaving and oil and watercolor painting, and she earned a certificate from the Sogetsu School of flower arranging. After Bea started quilting, and especially doing applique, she discovered how the painting and flower-arranging media were interchangeable with quilting designs in color and form.

I love the patterns in this book. Great color schemes! I thought it was very easy tracing these patterns onto fusible web, adhering to fabric, and then placing on my quilt top. I made a 50" x 50" quilt in a weekend utilizing 14 of the butterfly designs, and everyone that saw it raved.
