A highly rewarding project for the gardener or conservationist is to create a garden designed to attract and support native butterflies. The Butterfly Garden , with 90 lovely color photos, introduces North American butterflies and their life cycles, reveals the plants required by the larvae of 25 of the 700 native species, and lists nectar flowers adults prefer. A chapter on garden design provides two basic plans, one large, one small. The Xerces Society-Smithsonian Institution Butterfly Gardening: Creating Summer Magic in Your Garden (Sierra Club Bks., 1990), penned by ten authorities, is equally beautiful, has additional chapters on a variety of topics, and gives information for 78 species in an appendix. Both books provide resource lists. While most butterfly gardeners will want both books, the illustrated species entries in The Butterfly Garden make it a better choice for beginners.

It is presented in a format that is of interest to all ages. This book needs to go to print again and be widely available. If it doesn't, grab one while you can.
