Book Description

September 1, 2001
Since the moment of Original Sin, man has been mortal, trapped in time, and able only to grasp tenuously at the concept of eternity. That is, unless that man has been able to study and practice the arcane seventh-century teachings of Agrippolos the Left Handed, notably his major work, "The Chronomicon Novum." Then the Vast Unknowable is his. But man must beware: failure to master the teachings completely can result in a fate far worse than mere mortality.

Two strangers, a male sportswriter and a female student of the occult, buy a house together because, not in spite of, the fact that it is reputed to be haunted. In so doing, they become entangled in the history of the family who built the place to use as a venue for an experiment in controlling time. They also discover that the house now seems to have developed a life of its own, one which bears a distinct resemblance to the evil personality of the defrocked Seventh Century monk and his twisted philosophies on the nature of Sin and Eternity.

About the Author

Favorite Quote: "Man is the only creature who laughs . . . or needs to." (Anon. maybe himself)

Before he was able to begin fulfilling his lifetime ambition of writing on a full time basis, Terry Sheils devoted himself to thirty-five years of teaching drama and English at the high school level. He also found himself coordinating the Dramatic Arts and Theater Arts programs across the city of North York for 6 years, running workshops in drama and education for the Canadian Daily Newspaper Publishers' Association across Canada, writing and performing in early educational television, writing plays for student production and becoming virtually the curriculum writer-in-residence for the North York Board of Education.

Terry was born in Toronto, Canada in 1935 and still resides there with his wife of 43 years.

They have two mostly grown daughters. Finally, his outstanding physical attribute, he says, is his left ear, which is much admired in concentric circles.

2.0 out of 5 stars Butterfly House Promises But Disappoints, October 9, 2003

I read every glittering review, thinking wow this book must really be worth $20. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The prologue was very promising, but immediately after that it changed its tone and became just another mainstream novella. The two main characters are sketched out only slightly, and there's not enough description of the house, events or ancillary characters to keep it interesting. By Chapter 14, more than 1/2-way through the book, I kept waiting for something to happen. If you want a good old-fashioned scare, stick to the master of the genre, Steven King. I will be selling this book on Amazon to try to recover some of the money I wasted on this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get Ready for a Spook, December 19, 2001
By
Tonya Ramagos (Chattanooga, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Butterfly House (Paperback)
Jackson Rutledge and Sabrina Osterling are total strangers but an ad in a newspaper for a house "musty, dusty, and guaranteed haunted" sends them both rushing to the real estate office. Both have their own personal reasons for their interest in the house. Jackson's easy going personality instantly makes him a likable character. He doesn't believe in ghosts but sees the House as the perfect setting for his future plans. Sabrina is different, weird, more aggressive and obsessed with the past. Her belief in the supernatural has brought her to the House for answers. But the House has other plans for Jackson and Sabrina.

Time is the essence in The Butterfly House. T.K. Sheils will spook and horrify you with his story line and picture-painting description. You will realize just how precious time is and yet how we all take the present for granted. The evil of The Butterfly House will grip you, pull you in, and glue you to your seat while scaring you beyond belief.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifyingly Superb!, December 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Butterfly House (Paperback)
Wow! No wonder this book has won so many awards (including the 2001 EPPIE and Independent Publisher Awards). This book is terrifying, just as a horror should be. An original story - just when I thought I knew where it was leading, the author threw me a loop and had me on the edge of my seat! A chilling, fast-paced and fascinating read.!
