About the Author

Tanya Wright recurs in the role of "Kenya" on the popular HBO series, True Blood. A native of the Bronx, NY, she attended George School in Pennsylvania and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College before working at the New York Times. After participating in the prestigious Williamstown Theatre Festival, she relocated to LA to pursue an acting career, quickly gaining momentum on the small screen with roles on critically acclaimed television shows like 24, NYPD BLUE, and ER. While in front of the camera, Tanya continued to write. She was a semi-finalist in AMPAS' Nicholl Screenwriting Competition and a fellow at the Mark Taper Blacksmyth's Playwriting Lab. Tanya is also the writer/creator of several screenplays, television shows, and web-based series. Butterfly Rising, the film of her screenplay, marks her directorial debut. She enjoys dance, yoga, mentoring, and playing fetch with her black Labrador, Macarena (like the dance!), who plays "Baby Girl" in the movie.

More About the Author

Hi! I'm Tanya Wright (Deputy Kenya Jones on HBO's TRUE BLOOD and Netflix' ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK). I'm a gal from the Bronx who LOVES dark chocolate; pizza (black olives, garlic and anchovies are my preferred toppings); Trader Joes' White Cheddar Popcorn and Revlon's Black Cherry lipstick (yeah!). I have a dog named Macarena (yes! like the dance!)-- she's a playful- but- a- little- ghetto black labrador who loves tennis balls. Well, before I was an actor, I was...yep, you guessed it. I was a a writer:) Writing was my first true love until acting came and took me away...

My first job as an actor was on the Cosby Show (I played Theo's girlfriend, Tanya Simpson:) then, I moved to Los Angeles and enjoyed a string of roles on popular TV shows. Check out all the stuff I've done on my imdb page!

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0942859/

While in my dressing room, travelling from job to job-- anywhere I could, really--I'd write. I soon amassed a pretty hefty bank of screenplays and decided now was the time to begin my life's work of acting AND writing. I turned one of my screenplays into a movie (BUTTERFLY RISING) and wrote the book of the same name. I just published my second book-- I FOUND GOD IN MY HAIR: 98 spiritual principles I learned from...my hair-- which is part of my lifestyle brand, HAIRiette of HARLEM, complete with an interactive series(co-created by YOU) and a haircare line!

Thank you for being here! I hope you enjoy reading these books as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Tanya Wright

While Lilah and Rose are the main characters, each of the supporting characters also have a story to tell.

I read the first couple of chapters in this book only. The story just didn't grab me the way I thought it would. There were many positive reviews that encouraged me to buy this book but I cannot give that same encouragement to other buyers. Sorry. Not my cup of tea.

I thought the book was quite interesting. I like the way the characters all intertwined together and it was like the life cycle of a butterfly. The book had some sad parts as well as happiness. Tanya touched on the "gift" as well as the sixth sense. True friendship is hard to find and Rose and Lilah were truly friends.

I don't get it? I've managed to get through the first 75 pages and I just can't find any motivation to go any further. The characters are so pitiful and simple, the story so thin. Somebody please tell me why I should keep on going.

If I had to describe this book in one sentence... it would be "Butterfly Rising is beautiful in all ways."

Tanya Wright put her heart in this book, and as you turn the pages, it bleeds for you. As I was reading, I felt like I had stepped into time with Rose & Lilah. Doing what they were doing, riding down those dusty roads, getting away from it all. Their heart break became my heart break. Their joy was mine and mine alone!
I was so sad that this book ended, and that I read so darn fast! But I was equally joyus to have read this book at all! ( and to have to signed by Tanya herself ;)-)

If you are looking for a book to swallow you up and spit you out with raw emotion, read Butterfly Rising. Everyone has someone to relate to in this book, and someone to love!

Very rarely can a novel span almost the entire life span of its characters and keep a reader interested, but Wright did an amazing job of delving so deeply into these women's lives that one has to know what comes next. I believe any person, no matter their age or race, can find a piece of themselves within each of these characters, and that's what keeps the reader reading.

I can't remember the last time I finished a book in two days. That is, until Butterfly Rising. I was so glad that I purchased this through Kindle for my android phone so that I could continually keep it with me. I'm SO sad that the movie isn't out yet. I will be "stalking" the website to make sure I'm the first in line for tickets when it comes out.

Butterfly Rising is a wonderful read! The characters grow, change and transform just like the life cycle of a butterfly. The imagery throughout the book was tight as the story unfolded about these two women and the people who were in their lives. While tragedy and adversity surround these main characters, there is growth and strength in relationships they have with one another and with others. There is a positive energy that lies within the characters and made me root for them. As I read the book, I was compelled to know more of what happened to them! I couldn't put the book down! I hope that there will be a sequel about Rose and Lilah's daughters to keep the life cycle growing.

Tanya Wright's debut novel is a far-cry from what her fans would expect on HBO's True Blood. There are no vampires or werewolves, but there are two amazing, compelling women who form a lifelong bond born initially out of the grief and despair. Tanya takes us through their lives in a way that we feel as if we're on the journey with them. Lilah Belle and Rose become a part of us through the pages and stay with us long after we finish the novel. We want to know these women. In fact, we do know them as their story represents many of us. If you liked Sue Monk's The Secret Life of Bees, then you'll love Butterfly Rising.

Tanya Wright has penned a definite hit with this story of love, loss, friendship and the twists and turns of life in general. I would tell you that it is the story of the unlikely friendship of Lilah Belle and Rose Johnson but that would sell it a little short. This story is so much deeper than that. This story is about relationships, real and imagined. When Lilah and Rose take a road trip on a quest to mend some wounds, they cross paths with the infamous Lazarus where fears are faced, lies are made truth and dreams are revealed and realized. If you loved the Color Purple, you will love this book.
