About the Author

Tanya Wright recurs in the role of "Kenya" on the popular HBO series, True Blood. A native of the Bronx, NY, she attended George School in Pennsylvania and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College before working at the New York Times. After participating in the prestigious Williamstown Theatre Festival, she relocated to LA to pursue an acting career, quickly gaining momentum on the small screen with roles on critically acclaimed television shows like 24, NYPD BLUE, and ER. While in front of the camera, Tanya continued to write. She was a semi-finalist in AMPAS' Nicholl Screenwriting Competition and a fellow at the Mark Taper Blacksmyth's Playwriting Lab. Tanya is also the writer/creator of several screenplays, television shows, and web-based series. Butterfly Rising, the film of her screenplay, marks her directorial debut. She enjoys dance, yoga, mentoring, and playing fetch with her black Labrador, Macarena (like the dance!), who plays "Baby Girl" in the movie.

More About the Author

Hi! I'm Tanya Wright (Deputy Kenya Jones on HBO's TRUE BLOOD and Netflix' ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK). I'm a gal from the Bronx who LOVES dark chocolate; pizza (black olives, garlic and anchovies are my preferred toppings); Trader Joes' White Cheddar Popcorn and Revlon's Black Cherry lipstick (yeah!). I have a dog named Macarena (yes! like the dance!)-- she's a playful- but- a- little- ghetto black labrador who loves tennis balls. Well, before I was an actor, I was...yep, you guessed it. I was a a writer:) Writing was my first true love until acting came and took me away...

My first job as an actor was on the Cosby Show (I played Theo's girlfriend, Tanya Simpson:) then, I moved to Los Angeles and enjoyed a string of roles on popular TV shows. Check out all the stuff I've done on my imdb page!

While in my dressing room, travelling from job to job-- anywhere I could, really--I'd write. I soon amassed a pretty hefty bank of screenplays and decided now was the time to begin my life's work of acting AND writing. I turned one of my screenplays into a movie (BUTTERFLY RISING) and wrote the book of the same name. I just published my second book-- I FOUND GOD IN MY HAIR: 98 spiritual principles I learned from...my hair-- which is part of my lifestyle brand, HAIRiette of HARLEM, complete with an interactive series(co-created by YOU) and a haircare line!

Thank you for being here! I hope you enjoy reading these books as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Tanya Wright

I read the first couple of chapters in this book only. The story just didn't grab me the way I thought it would. There were many positive reviews that encouraged me to buy this book but I cannot give that same encouragement to other buyers. Sorry. Not my cup of tea.

I thought the book was quite interesting. I like the way the characters all intertwined together and it was like the life cycle of a butterfly. The book had some sad parts as well as happiness. Tanya touched on the "gift" as well as the sixth sense. True friendship is hard to find and Rose and Lilah were truly friends.

I don't get it? I've managed to get through the first 75 pages and I just can't find any motivation to go any further. The characters are so pitiful and simple, the story so thin. Somebody please tell me why I should keep on going.

Tanya captures beautifully a story of grace and redemption. While life is ugly and heartbreaking, it is also a beautiful journey! Brilliant first novel. Keep pursuing your gifts Tanya!

This book is amazing! The characters are all so relatable, there is at least one you can identify with. Reading this took me on an emotional thrill ride...sadness, happiness, sexiness, sweetness, vulnerability...it really has everything. The imagery she uses is beautiful! I truly enjoyed going on this journey with these strong women and experiencing their changes along the way. The metamorphasis is incredible and it makes you feel like your hopes and dreams are all within your reach. I won't give away the plot, you'll have to read it and when you do you will fall in love. Mrs. Tanya Wright has outdone herself!!!!

Finding time in my busy schedules to find a Great book and a Good cup of coffee is hard to do these days. But, I found one book that just did that for me.(Still have not found the coffee!) Butterfly RISING is one of the most comforting, funny, gut wrenching and true to life book that I have read. It is hard for me to pick and choose what I want to read with all the choice of books out there(Never judge a book by it COVER). I have made many mistakes over the years. But, this is one book that just the name drew me in. It hit home in many ways. We have all felt some sort of loss in our lives. Whether it is a loved one, a great friend, or a lover this book will make you smile, giggle and hold your breath. It opens all doors to your own sadness of loss. But, we always gain something along way that helps us get over it to find out who we really are. I love this book. Trust me!! You will not be disappointed! Tanya Wright you are Wonderful!! Thank You!

Lazarus, the Butterflies, the pain, the joy of sweet release....what a wonderful undertaking in this well written book. The story unfolds delicately but with poise and fever all at the same time. There are undeniable spiritual undertones, and yet laced with human drama and indecision. At the end of the day...so as not to give away the story, it was a book that I just had to keep reading in every free moment...until I reached the end. I highly recommend this book, albeit a novel, for anyone who has experienced pain and indecision, anyone seeking liberty from some crisis in their life. I was entertained, but made to think at the same time! While I may not be a literary scholar--and the average Jane and Joe isn't--I just love a great book to escape with even one I have to wrestle away from my wife to read first when I bring it home. Great job Ms. Wright! Well done!!
