It was a pleasure to read this emotionally poignant and beautifully written behind-the-scenes look at Gloria Stuart through the eyes of her great granddaughter. The contrast in character between the author and the actress provides a unique dual biography of a portion of two different lives. As the book progresses with its fantastic descriptions and dialogue, the reader is pulled into the world of Gloria's workshop and the last projects of her long, accomplished life. It becomes clear how much Gloria shaped her great granddaughter's development into a young woman who is increasingly confident in sharing her own gifts. It also becomes clear how much Deborah shaped and prolonged fulfillment in Gloria's life, filling the role of Great Gloria's apprentice as she worked on her butterfly books, and giving Gloria a reason and purpose to stay around a little longer and touch the world a bit more with her energy and talent.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Gloria Stuart as a real person, anyone interested in delving into the arts and the lives of artistically sensitive souls, as well as anyone interested simply in a good, compelling, uplifting, narrative read. If this were fiction, I would have thoroughly enjoyed it, but knowing that the people and experiences were real--and that this is a unique inside-look into the famous actress from Titanic through the eyes of someone who had the opportunity to spend so much time so close to her in the last years of her life--makes it that much more enticing.

The fact that we can still have such remarkable books being made by hand and that the story of it can be shared by ebook is by itself so uplifting. When you add to that the beauty of a great grandmother transferring her verve for art and life to her great grand daughter - this is inspiring. When, on top of this, we learn about the life of one of the great women of cinema, Gloria Stuart who played Old Rose in Titanic - why this is something to treasure and share!

Loved this lyrical memoir. A gentle Hero's Journey.where a mismeasured page can be a tragedy of mythic proportion. Do not be deceived by the poetic style of the writing or the charming art studio setting of the drama. This is a story of life and death, success and failure and the sorting of those priorities that affect us all into a pattern that makes life meaningful and ultimately exaultant.
Come, test your talent for Haiku. Delight in the intentional mistake. Curl up with a sweet tea and allow this book to wash over your heart.
