Book Description

January 1, 1996
Inspired by the Gurdjieff ideas, this long-lost treasure of the Fourth Way, predates Ouspenskys In Search of the Miraculous by over two decades. Originally published in 1927 as Beyond Behaviorism, it has been out-of-print for over half a century. Its historical significance as one of the earliest books about the Gurdjieff work is noteworthy.

C. Daly King presents us with a poetic metaphor of stunning intensity: the metamorphosis of the butterfly from a worm, an intriguing representation of mans potential for transformation. King also examines the nature of higher consciousness and the relationship of mysticism and science. His book reflects a transmission of ideas from Gurdjieff to Orage, bypassing the Ouspensky influence. A long, probing introduction by Terry Winter Owens explores many implications embedded in Kings writing (and in the ideas themselves) and offers her own compelling insights and perspectives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Outline of Fourth Way Principles, January 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Butterfly: A Symbol of Conscious Evolution (Paperback)
Originally titled Beyond Behaviorism: The Future of Psychology this is the first of several books Daly King wrote about the fourth way ideas he was learning at the time from A.R. Orage in New York. Although no mention of Gurdjieff is made in this volume anyone familiar with Fourth Way concepts will instantly recognise the source of the ideas set forth here. However this book is still worthwhile for the already knowledgable as Daly King was such a stimulating writer and describes the central metaphor of this work, that of the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly as representing the possible transformation of man's consciousness through conscious labours, with great skill. As a first generation Gurdjieffian and professional psychologist Daly King possessed a great vantage point from which to compare fourth way ideas with contemporary science and this is the chief characteristic of his books. Although this book is only an outline (the full exposition of all the ideas and practices is given in King's later work The Oragean Version) it is still worthwhile and maybe people just interested in psychological ideas will find the critique of the limitations of contemporary psychology insightful.
