DK has done it again! I have been very pleased with their recent large nature pictorial books such as Rain Forest and Reef. This book is right up there with the others. It contains hundreds of stunning photos with just enough explanatory text to fascinate. This book is a bargain even at list price. At the Amazon price it's a steal. Anyone remotely interested in butterflies and moths will treasure this book. I eagerly await whatever their next endeavor will be.

Visual feasts are so rare in books today. Just like "Rainforest" before, "Butterfly" is exceedingly beautiful! Packed with over 500 carefuly selected photographs, Marent gives 'readers' a look in to the complex life of the average Butterfly. From north to south and back, we are invited along the world tour, and are blessed. Having spent over 50 years photographing butterflies, along with other animals, birds, flowers and natural history events, I know how difficult it is to get the perfect shot. Of all the books, and studies I have reviewed and read, and there have been many, this beyond a doubt is one of the best.

Depending on which figures you want to believe, there are at least 165,000 species of butterflies that have been identified in the world and there are quite probably over 200,000 in existence today. This number grows less each year, but that is another story. Thomas Marent, who is one of the leading wildlife and nature photographers today, has completely outdone himself with this work; Butterfly!

This book consists of over 500 of the highest quality shots I have ever seen. Marent has not limited himself to the adult butterfly though, and has given us stunning photographs in the caterpillar phase as well as egg. Each shot is a pure work of art. This is one of those books that you can spend hours mulling through; seeing different details with each viewing. The details and clarity are absolutely perfect.

The text is quite informative and interesting, but the primary reason for reading and owning this work are the photographs. They just do not get better than this.

The only objection I have to this wonderful work is that I wish the author had included some technical data and techniques. This would have been a treasure for amateurs like me. While I will never in the world be able to even come close to equaling work like this, I can certainly dream.

For an absolute treat for the eye, do yourself a favor and check this one out. I promise you that you will not be sorry.

The Ozarks

I got my copy yesterday,and am very pleased.Its not only a book about butterflies,it is a book about life stages of this insect.some of the photography is so sculptural in nature,highly detailed and just plain lovely.The colors in the images are very enhanced,but not exaggerated.I was very pleased.
I quilt,and make art objects for my own pleasure.
hmmmI have never made a soft sculptured caterpillar (YET!)

As someone who loves butterflies, I have bought 20 more books of butterflies, and this one might be the most beautiful among them.
All the photos of this book are catched from live creatures, not from dead specimen. Marecent's photo style is close up catch, with excellent details & delicacy. The beauties the colors of butterflies are also well expressed.You can also learn some knowledge of butterflies through reading the footnotes of the photos. If you want me to say something bad about this book, I would say there are too little photos of birdwinds butterflies according to my personal favour.

Although the glorious photographs in this book easily qualify it for coffee table use, it is considerably more than that both in the organization of the book and in the information that is provided. The butterflies are grouped by function rather than species, so that the reader is shown the various ways a butterflies develops, propagates the species, adapts to varied surroundings. The photos beyond being beautiful are highly informative; really it's difficult to comprehend that one man's eye and camera could take in all this information and beauty and present it so perfectly, at the same time providing succinct important information about each photo in the captions-- about amazing butterflies throughout the world. It's a book to be picked up time and again.

One of the best books I have ever seen! The book quality is excellent and worth far more than I paid for it! Enough said.

I purchased this book before Christmas for my wife who is painting. It had only good reviews, so I was hoping to get a nice book. I purchased on Amazon before with average ratings above 4.5, just to be disappointed when I got them.
This book truly deserves 5 stars, not only for the pictures who are outstanding, but also for the text. The book does not try to turn you into an expert - it is easy to read. I myself are involved in Macro Photography and it is a great inspiration to me. Wholly recommended!!!

This is a beautifully photographed book showing in exquisite detail these wonders of nature. In addition major sections detailing life cycle and adaptation provide a basic sense of the purpose behind the design of the butterfly.

Was interested in a book of pictures to help identify butterfly photos I have taken during my travels. This book has been helpful.
