A well-written & sincere recollection of a Caribbean childho, July 30, 1999

Persaud's latest novel is a tribute to her own use of memory as a writer. Part memoir, part fiction, this is a great novel for those who spent any part of their childhood in the Caribbean. My memories came back as I read the novel which incorporates the defiance of a headstrong girl who is trying to figure out just who she is in the complex and confusing world around her with important narrative allusions which parlay the socio-historical background of the time and place (pre-Independence Trinidad). As a story of growing up, it resonates with things in common to us all worldwide and brings back those things that seem lost to us now and that we should cherish. I gave this one to my mom.
