Editorial Reviews

Oliver The Penguin is not so much a band, or an album. It’s a persona — a character that sprung from the minds of Top Line songwriter/composer Rie Sinclair and musician-about-town Tommy Walter (Abandoned Pools/Eels). Button Pusher launched in March 2009 as an unexpected collaboration between the two during an afternoon writing session. The songs are playful but have a mysterious, if not a dark, side. Delivering “nimble electro-pop”, the album sketches a little guy that appeals to the core innocence in us all; reminiscent of The Postal Service, Frou Frou & The Bird And The Bee. Smashing more than sound waves together, Rie’s lyrics encapsulate laws of physics as they might play out in relationships. This happy & dreamy (but melancholic) CD proves something to definitely keep on rotation in your playlist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pushes my buttons!!!, July 22, 2010

This review is from: Button Pusher (Audio CD)
I hate to do this quick and dirty, but I don't have much time to myself this week. Nevertheless I thought it was important to stop and tell you - BUY BUTTON PUSHER. If you ever liked Feist or Mandalay, or A Fine Frenzy's One Cell In The Sea, or Shiny Toy Guns's Season of Poison... or any other bands that fall in there or between there, you will like this... but it's really none of those exactly. It's quirky, trippy, but beautiful - and almost adorable at times. Definitely unique. Both Rie Sinclair and Tommy Walter are talented composers with amazing voices (though you'll hear more of Rie than Tommy singing). Floaty, ethereal soundscapes from our digital age.

If you want to purchase a few individual songs rather than the whole album, just to get a feel, I recommend "From Long Sleep", "Girls & Boys", "Do I Leave My Heart Here"... and most definitely "Mad Scientist". It's my fave, might not be everyone's.

In conclusion, please don't let OTP slip through your fingers. He's a good little penguin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh and addicting, August 27, 2011

I heard this duo a few times on Pandora and really liked the sound. I downloaded the MP3 here.

I love this group. Their sound is fresh and Rie Sinclair has a magical voice. Not powerful, but rich, intimate and haunting. The arrangements are polished and the sound is unique.

The only downside to the album is there is not more of it.

Who can not love the drawing of oliver, the penguin?

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing album!, February 10, 2011

After listening to Button Pusher, I can't wait for more material from Oliver the Penguin!
All of the tracks definitely are worth listening to, and have a special uniqueness to them. If you like Postal Service, LIGHTS, Owl City, or anything like The Album Leaf - you will like this. It's a mixture between LIGHTS and Postal Service, but with a lot more quirkiness and uniqueness.
Definitely a good recommendation! You will not be disappointed. "Paper Airplane" and "From Long Sleep" are definitely my favorites from the album. Give it a listen.
