I bought this and "Embroideries" of the same series on super-sale at the Met and I have to say that I would not pay full price for them. They are lovely, but they are small (note the dimensions before you buy) and are not very information-dense and I have seen some of the items featured on a larger, more approachable scale in other books. I recommend looking at the "Fashion in Detail" books published by the V & A before you purchase these. Still, the Snowshill collection is one of the best in the world, and these books offer the only published examinination specifically of this collection(ideally, the manor would publish a full-scale book on its collected pieces). There are unique, interesting pieces and work featured here (some bonnets in amazing condition, and a reticule trimed with cut fish scales!) and scathing as I can be of them, I will probably end up buying the others in the series.

this is a charming and inspriring book for anyone interested in historic costume or buttons and trims.

the detailed photos are, in fact, detailed. technique can be examined as well as design.

the examples come from the collection of a late victorian eccentric and include british and non-british examples from various social classes.

a fine addition to a costume or textile library.
