I had this work on an LP around 1987, and loaned it to someone who then moved - probably so he could keep it! I searched for a recording of it on the Web every two or three months - for twenty years. Then I found this recording.Usually a new recording of a work long loved doesn't come up to my memories of it. (Why is every Maginificat too fast? Why can't I replace the soaring rendition of "Ei! Wie schmeckt der Coffee süße" from the Coffee Cantata that again (will I never learn) I loaned to someone? But ah!! This has to be the ULTIMATE Jungste Gericht!! The ultimate Buxtehude for a Buxtehude addict. It is stunning! The voices! The original instrumentation! A masterpiece by a master, and masterfully recreated. |
