First Choice for Buxtehude's Organ Music,
By
This review is from: Buxtehude: Opera Omnia VIII Organ Works 3 (Audio CD)
This CD is volume 8 in Ton Koopman's project of recording Buxtehude's complete works (opera omnia) and the third disc of Buxtehude's organ music. A Dutch organist and conductor, Koopman is widely known for his stylish, enthusiastic performances of Bach, Buxtehude, and other baroque masters. My review of Koopman's first disc of organ music (Buxtehude: Opera Omnia III) listed other available recordings of Buxtehude's complete organ works and concluded that Koopman was a top choice. The second (Dieterich Buxethude: Organ Works, Vol. 2) and third discs in the series have only strengthened that conclusion.
Koopman performs on historic instruments from Buxtehude's time--in this case, the organ at Hamburg's St. Jacobi Kirche, which was built by Arp Schnitger in 1693 and restored by Jurgen Ahrend in 1993. He offers a balanced program of works in various styles, including preludes, fugues, ciaconas, and chorales. The performances are delightful, and the sound quality could not be bettered. Highly recommended. Note: Organ Works 4 (Opera Omnia IX) is now available Dietrich Buxtehude: Organ Works, Vol. 4. |
