This review is from: Buxtehude: Organ Music, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
After listening to this CD, I understand why Bach traveled to hear Buxtehude's organ music. Only Bach would only top his inventive compositions. I am no expert on this composer and have not listened to other performers by I was blown away by the beauty and complexity of this music. AS usual Naxos has great notes explaining each of the works.

For me the highlights of this CD are the Mqagnificat primi toni which contains four wonderfully arrange fugues in nine minutes of rapturous beauty and the preludium in g minor which is unusual in Buxtehude in that it contains a chaconne which followed by variations.
I believe that some Buxtehude organ music shoul be heard by all interested i classical music. Whether the are better recordings I doubt because I was spellbound.
Please excuse typos I have a neurolgic disease.

5.0 out of 5 stars overcoming my son's sarcasm, June 16, 2011

This review is from: Buxtehude: Organ Music, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
As I was playing this for the first time, after receiving it from another terrific Amazon associate dealer, my 34-year-old son [country, alternative Christian rock] walks through the living room as one of the slower pieces is playing and grumbles, "Funeral dirge". To which I reply, "Funeral dirge, my big toe!"

So after a while I hear him coming back down the stairs, so I switch it to the final piece, a powerful prelude. With a sly grin (he's actually enjoying this music to some extent), he starts mumbling, "Line up the limos....."
To which I reply, as Buxtehude is starting to rock and fully engage the bass pedals, "Line up the limos and Kick Butt!"

Wonderful music, wonderfully played, on an organ that is more than up to the task. Terrific variety, too.

This CD captures all the great sounds of the included works by Buxtehude, whose works rival those of his better-known successor, J. S. Bach
