Book Description

Buy Shoes on Wednesday and Tweet at 4:00, former investigative journalist Mark Di Vincenzo’s follow-up to his bestselling Buy Ketchup in May and Fly at Noon, is another endlessly fascinating and eminently useful compendium of expert tips on perfect timing for a myriad of activities—more of the best times to buy this, do that, and go there. Covering an even wider range of topics than before—including beauty tips, pets, cars, and children—this book is an absolute must for readers of Schott’s Miscellany and other collections of useful information, and for multi-taskers searching for better, healthier, thriftier ways to do things. After all, timing is everything.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The author has his research pattern down pat. He consults experts, from Best Buy to a local veterinarian, to get opinions on timing for topics on purchasing that people really care about. Such was the content for his first “when to” book, Buy Ketchup in May and Fly at Noon (2009), and this time he collects a wealth of data, dividing it into 14 categories. Samples abound, such as spreading mulch in late spring, buying high-definition TVs in January, keeping tax returns for seven years, leasing cars in September, and resolving this winter to lose weight. And so on. His diaries keep from being repetitive by his insertions of “did you know’s” and “money-saving tips” and “second opinions” (just in case the first one doesn’t resonate). So we learn that Southwest Airlines is the best for redeeming frequent-flier miles and that experts are divided on whether it is best to be interviewed for a job first or last. Blame his “sources” in the appendix if you disagree! --Barbara Jacobs

Review

“The $13.99 cover price seems like a bargain for the quick-hit book jam-packed with helpful information.” (Newport News Daily Press )

“[Di Vincenzo] consults experts, from Best Buy to a local veterinarian, to get opinions on timing for topics on purchasing that people really care about . . . [A] wealth of data.” (Booklist )

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy Shoes on Wednesday and Tweet at 4:00 October 4, 2012
Format:Paperback
Buy Shoes on Wednesday and Tweet at 4:00 by Mark Di Vincenzo is a fun and informative read about when to buy things to save money, and when to go places to save both time and money. If you have ever wondered when is the best time to buy shoes, when to tweet, and much more - this is a book you must read!

Buy Shoes on Wednesday and Tweet at 4:00 is a well-organized and researched book that is truly helpful. The chapters are organized on such topics as: getting it, getting rid of it, getting pretty, getting rich, getting healthy, getting the job done, around the house, around the world, and many more.

The author didn't just make up the best times to do these things either. He lists his sources in the back, so it is up to you to believe what they said about each topic or not. Personally, I don't agree with all of them based off of personal knowledge on the topics of internet shopping and buying and selling college textbooks. However, in some cases, the sources may just differ with what happened with my experiences.

The book is more of a guideline for me really, and the suggested times to do these things does make sense and is a good guide to doing them. There is a large variety of topics covered, and is a good reference when wanting to get a good deal or figure out when is the best time to do something or go somewhere.

Overall, I did enjoy it and found it to be helpful. I recommend it to everyone who wants to save money and time.

* Thank you to the publisher of Buy Shoes on Wednesday and Tweet at 4:00, William Morrow, for providing me with a copy of this book for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

3.0 out of 5 stars Write a review on Thursday! November 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just finished reading Buy Shoes on Wednesday and Tweet at 4:00. The reading was very easy and was subtitled very nicely which made it easy to SKIP certain sections that I personally had NO interest in. I purchased the book on my Kindle. Although after reading it I realized I really did not need to read this but with saying that I wish I bought the physical book so if there WAS something I was interested in it would be easier to refer back to.
recommendation: if you want some quick light reading and maybe learn a thing or two this book is fine but again buy the PHYSICAL book so you can refer back to it

It had good info, but not a lot of content there so it was more like an expanded magazine article.

1.0 out of 5 stars They have nerve charging money for this
I read books of all kinds and this concept was so interesting, but the actual book is awful. Truly unreadable. If I had purchased an actual book I would return it. Read more

Didn't really care for the book. Bought it for the kindle and it would be much easier to refer to specific pages if I had the actual book.

More About the Author

AUTHOR
As a journalist with nearly a quarter century of experience, I've exposed abuses and been described as a writer who makes the complicated seem simple.

During a two-year stint as a reporter on the two-person state desk of a small daily newspaper along the southern shores of Lake Erie, I was the first reporter in Ohio to write about the state's first AIDS victim and about one of the first Ohioans diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.

From there, I moved to Virginia, to work for the Daily Press, a 100,000-plus-circulation newspaper. As a reporter there, I exposed wrongs, such as rampant abuses at public mental hospitals and decades of neglect by the agencies that monitor the environment. Newspapers from coast to coast, from The Washington Post to the Spokane (Washington) Review, published many of my stories, regardless of their length. (The Post jumped one of my stories three times, from page 1 to page 4 to page 5 to page 6 - a rarity even at a newspaper not afraid to publish lengthy stories.)

I've landed interviews with many VIPs, including Billy Graham, Jesse Jackson, Strom Thurmond and others, including Soviet generals and European royalty.

And I've won numerous awards, competing against reporters from The Washington Post, The Washington Times and The Associated Press, among others. In 1999, the Virginia Press Association created an award for the best news writing portfolio in the state - the closest thing Virginia had to a reporter-of-the-year award. I won it that year and then again in 2000. The next year I beat out reporters from The Charlotte Observer and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to win the Southern Environmental Law Center's first-place journalism award. In 2001, I became the Daily Press' metro editor, shepherding and editing my reporters' award-winning stories and directing coverage of the newspaper's urban and suburban areas.

Over the years, I supplemented my newspaper work and honed my long-form writing skills by doing magazine cover stories.

During the summer of 2007, I left daily journalism to pursue book projects and long-form journalism and to start Business Writers Group, http://www.businesswritersgroup.com, a corporate writing and public relations company.

Born and reared in Cleveland, I'm a first generation American who graduated with honors from Bowling Green State University. I live in Newport News,a shipyard town in coastal Virginia that produced William Styron, Ella Fitzgerald and Pearl Bailey, with my wife, Jayne, and daughters Olivia and Sophia. My oldest daughter, Rosie, attends Oklahoma University.
