Book Description

March 30, 2011
Pet Food is the only food industry allowed to lie to consumers. The only food industry given FDA permission to violate federal food safety law. Buyer Beware is the documented truth about what millions of pet parents are unknowingly feeding their pets. "While pet food advertising bombards us with the images of plump fresh meats, brightly colored vegetables, and beautiful grains in their products, Susan talks about ethoxyquin, recalls, rendering, and deceptive advertising. And she’s got the facts to back up her writings. Something, as you will learn from reading this book, the pet food industry is not required to have. It is high time that the pet food industry’s secrets were brought to light. This book represents a giant step toward exposing everyday practices that jeopardize our pets’ health. Learn the truth." Laurie S. Coger, DVM, CVCP www.TheWholisticVet.com Buyer Beware includes a large section explaining the regulations within the pet food industry, including shocking details of little known FDA Compliance Policies that allow diseased animals, pesticide contaminated food ingredients, and much more, to be processed into pet food. Further, the new book contains a section titled 'How Horrible Can Pet Food Ingredients Get?, providing readers easy to understand details of common pet food ingredients such as Animal Fat, By-Product Meal, Canola Oil, Dyes, and much more. The book also includes eight personal stories of pet food tragedy; some tragedies of the 2007 pet food recall and other tragedies from 'regular' non-recalled pet food. "As I was reading the pet tales to Mom, we both started bawling. Those stories are just heart breakers" says Mollie M. pet parent that previewed Buyer Beware. Mollie M. also shared "This is exactly what I have been searching for, a book on the truth behind the pet food industry. There is not a single book on the market today like this; I know, I have been searching for one." Buyer Beware represents years of research and writing from TruthaboutPetFood.com; learn the truth about what your dog or cat could be eating.

About the Author

Just like so many pet parents, Susan learned the 'truth' about pet food the hard way. Suddenly at 8 years old, Sam - Susan's beloved dog, showed a tumor on her pelvic bone. The veterinarian gave Susan the worst news; bone cancer. She had two weeks to tell Sam good-bye. And then things got worse. Her veterinarian told Susan her dog's cancer was probably the result of chemical preservatives in her pet food; chemicals used to extend the shelf life of the dog food. A phone call to the pet food manufacturer (the leading dog food in the U.S. at the time) changed Susan's life. When asked what the 'shelf life' was for this popular dog food, the company told Susan "25 years". The pet food would remain 'fresh' for more than 17 years after Sam died. From this moment on Susan has educated herself on pet food. In 2005 she took her pet food knowledge online developing TruthaboutPetFood.com. In the few short years since developing the website, TruthaboutPetFood.com has a following of pet parents all over the world. Susan's pet food advocacy work has led to hundreds of radio and television interviews, public speaking including Western University of Health Science veterinary students, and even gotten her banned from attending pet food industry trade events (what exactly are they hiding?). Susan Thixton and a world of pet parents continue to fight for safe pet food. Visit TruthaboutPetFood.com and register for the free newsletter to stay updated.

This book exposes the Pet Food Industry (PFI) for the deceit and HARM it is causing and even worse, knowingly promotes! Through it's manufacturing, advertising and lack of consumer relations practices. It is not the first book about the PFI's calculated deceptive and greed oriented practices. But it is the most definitively researched one, as derived from thoroughly documented articles posted on the Truth About Pet Food (TAPF) website, owned by the same author.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Because it juxtaposes eight heart wrenching pet owners' experiences of how they were very personally touched by deadly, tainted pet food. Hard, cold, depressing statistics and facts are transformed into the reality of an uncaring, unethical and profit motivated industry actually doing real damage to real victims, the pets and their families! The magic of the book, if it could be called magic at all, is in it's comprehensive study of the PFI, ingredient-by-ingredient. Explaining what the ingredients mean. And explaining what is the effect upon the pet. This book belongs on every pet lover's library shelf! If the human food supply system was to be examined, exposed and documented in this manner to expose it's own respective deficiencies, as it has been done regarding the PFI, then it would become a matter of outrage and unending lawsuits!

The book reveals how the PFI has and continues to ignore thousands of affected pet owners who remain unacknowleged and without apology for the damages and heartache they have suffered from an industry that is worth billions of dollars! And it shows how government agencies, tasked with guaranteeing product safety and compliance with regulations, continues to leave consumers and citizens unprotected. It is, as the book reveals, one of the few industries that is knowingly and continually exempted from "truth in advertising!" For that reason alone this failure is an on-going crime, and a disgrace, and an issue that is utterly unbecoming to America's free enterprise system. And most especially goes against a democratic society, where government officials are elected in good faith to protect and enforce consumers' rights and safety. And yet how they are knowingly allowed to fail us.

The GOOD NEWS of this book, and the purpose behind it, is all about consumers becoming educated! Many are moving towards non-commercial whole food feeding. Which is perhaps the greatest tool at their disposal. Since the best hope for demanding any reform is always through the econominc consequences applied to an industry, as it gradually loses it's "believers"...once called loyal customers!

For years I have been searching for a book about the real story behind pet food industry, and yesterday my search came to an end, with the release of Buyer Beware: The crimes, lies and truth about pet food by author, advocate Susan Thixton.

After reading the advance copy, I knew that this book would do to the pet food industry, what Rachael Carson's book Silent Spring did for nuclear power. There is not a single book in publication today about the pet food industry that is a more comprehensive investigation of the $18 billion dollar pet food industry.

In this groundbreaking book, author Susan Thixton, reveals the widespread corruption and greed endemic of the industry. That pet food is the lucrative answer to the disposal of billions of tons of waste from the manufacturers of products for humans. The companies that profit from the diversion of waste material are some of the largest conglomerates in the nation. They enjoy the benefits of operating in an industry lacking meaningful oversight to create the pet food brands that dominate the world market today.

Backed by years of solid research, Susan Thixton's book Buyer Beware, is the most comprehensive and exhaustive report to date, of the tragic consequences of a market dominated by pet food made of waste material.

Buyer Beware: The crimes, lies and truth about pet food belongs on the shelf of every pet parent, in the office of every veterinarian, and ideally, on the desk of every government and regulatory body responsible for the safety and oversight of the product millions of Americans feed their pets everyday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book May 4, 2011

I received the book in a timely manner.
If you have a dog or a cat you are going to want to read Buyer Beware before you buy your next bag of pet food. It is amazing to read what passes for "food" and we are feeding it to our pets. This book tells you how to decipher what the terminology on the label means, for example, meat meal - this means the ingredient could be any euthanized animal, expired grocery meat, or restaurant grease. Nice. The book is a learning experience.
