4.0 out of 5 stars That's the Stuff !, September 10, 2003
This review is from: Buzz (Audio CD)
Founded by guitarist Steve Plunkett, who had previously played with, among others, Neal Schon in Silver Condor, Autograph burst onto the scene in 1983. Their Neil Kernon-produced debut "Sign In Please" went gold and platinum, selling over 700,000 copies in the US alone. "Turn up the radio" shot into the US Billboard Top 30 chart.... but so much for past history, today's scene looks somewhat different to put it mildly. Despite all this Steve Plunkett has come up with a real killer of a rock album, brimming with hooks, yet incorporating hip and modern influences in remarkably successful fashion. Fluid, grooving guitar riffs and melodic choruses ( "Heart Raper" is awesome) are never far away and jive with the superlative production. There is a distinct Def Leppard-style sound to much of the album, with similarities in the song structures that cannot be ignored, but this only enhances the overall listening experience. Its been twenty years since the debut and Autograph are back, better than ever ! In a word, a superb album ! Fans left disappointed by the last Def Leppard album should get their rocks off on this.....

If new albums by once popular hair bands were any indication, the quality of material on Autograph's first studio album in nearly twenty years wasn't going to be anything to rave over. Upon finally finding this CD for a reasonable price (for an import) I picked it up since I was a big fan of their material from the early '80s. I was pleasantly surprised that the album is really good. Certainly different from their earlier releases, but that's to be expected from a band with a new lineup and such a long time between albums. The two strongest tracks are "Buzz" and "Heart Raper", but all ten tracks are solid rockers. It's a shame that once rocking bands like Warrant and Firehouse can't put out decent albums like this anymore.
