I have been wearing the LifeTrak Move C300 as my primary watch for most of a month now. Due to the rubber watchband and highly adjustable closure, it is pretty comfortable, despite the fact that the "head" of the watch is very large/long for my small wrist.

I just returned from a 10-day vacation spent mostly outdoors in Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park and other outdoors areas in California and Nevada. The C300 allowed me to monitor my activity from day to day. I also wear the watch at home, to walk the dog and at the gym to not only monitor my activity but my heart rate and % of target heart rate.

The thing I like most about the LifeTrak over my older heart monitor (Polar S120 Heart Rate Monitor Watch) is that I no longer have to wear a strap with a transmitter on it around my chest. I always hated that part of the Polar, so I love not having to wear it with the LifeTrak.

The C300 has a number of screens:

Using the top button on the side of the watch:
1) Watch mode shows the current time (to the second), day, date and the current day's activity (steps, distance or calories, whichever you've chosen).
2) Hourly mode shows activity of the current day by hour and the current day's activity (whatever way you've chosen).
3) Daily mode shows activity of the current day and past 7 days in bar chart format and the current day's activity (whatever way you've chosen).
4) Workout mode includes a stopwatch to time your workout and the workout activity (whatever way you've chosen).

Using the bottom button on the side of the watch:
1) Synch your watch to LifeTrak's app.
2) Start and stop timing your workout.

Years and years ago, I sought a watch that would measure my pulse. I'm a runner and that seemed like an easy objective--the watch would be on my wrist and through some sensory magic, tracking would be easy.

I could only find one watch that did this. It must have been golden because it was stolen out of a checked airline bag, and I resorted to a Polar heart rate monitor watch with a strap. That worked fine, but I hated the need for the strap, so I like this little watch because it does the simple thing I've always wanted.

Problem is, the world has passed this unit by. It has Bluetooth connectivity and talks a good game, but it's not a GPS device and the measuring of steps to track mileage is imperfect at best. You have to train the device and if you run at different speeds--such as a training pace, tempo pace, and a race pace--the tracking is worthless.

I can't really recommend purchasing this unless all you're really after is an easy way to monitor your heart rate. That would have met the grade in 1999, but in 2013, not so much. The good news is that such a watch now is cheaper than the one I bought and had stolen in 1999, so there's that. I recommend exploring all the new toys first and stair-stepping down until you match features with your budget. If that gets you to a heart rate monitor and you're a walker with a consistent pace, you'll be happy with this.

This should be a treat for myself, a little convenience for me to use when I exercise. Instead, the LifeTrak Move C300 Heart Rate Monitor is yet another lesson in why product launches shouldn't be rushed. First impressions matter.

FRUSTRATIONS

* Much of the information displayed is too small to easily read.
* Heart rate readings require pushing and holding down a button.
* The pedometer reading isn't accurate; one-third to one-half of the actual steps are not counted.
* The watch band is relatively small, not stretchy and not comfortable (the latter is personal preference and your result may vary).
* Bluetooth connectivity is frustrating.
* Product released without an Android app.

In summary, I wouldn't recommend the LifeTrak Move C300 Heart Rate Monitor and I'm hesitant to try anything else from the same manufacturer. What's the point of offering Bluetooth connectivity unless it runs smoothly? And how can a company justify launching an electronic device that only supports iOS devices?

Rating: Two stars

I bought two of these for myself and my boyfriend so we can motivate each other to be more active via appropriate taunting and teasing. I've been wearing the watch for a little over two weeks now and I love it. Here are a couple of things you might find useful:

STEP CALIBRATION:
The first day I wore the watch I noticed that by 2pm I was magically a few thousand steps ahead of where I expected to be (compared to having worn an old-fashioned pedometer for a few weeks before then). Although it certainly felt like a nice achievement to have 800 steps added every time I washed my hands (no joke), I decided that was cheating so I emailed LifeTrak to ask them what was going on. They advised me (within an hour or so, great service!) to change the step calibration to be less sensitive and that's been WAY more accurate. I'm quite light-footed so I'm actually afraid by what their more sensitive setting would be, given the default. Anyway, if you're having the same problem, from the main screen hold the top button until a setting screen appears, then hold the bottom button until a fourth setting lights up, STEP CAL. Under step cal, select Option B (A is the more sensitive). The distance calculation works quite well from what I've observed on marked trails.

DEFAULT APP:
The Argus app as noted is iPhone-only (4S or higher due to the bluetooth protocol used) and there's no Android version (yet). Apart from that, there is no way to disable the in-app tracking, which drains my phone's battery and then gives me redundant bogus step counts. I really didn't like it, which in turn led me on a very in-depth research quest, during which I found that the watch is compatible with A DIFFERENT APP!
