Whoa...,

Terror Squad initially seemed to be one of those groups where people knew the name of the frontman (Fat Joe) and nobody else. But that all changed when "Lean Back", which was really Remy Ma's song, went all the way to the top of the Hot 100 chart; still, I think HipHopSite.com said it best when it said that that was another example of an artist scoring a massive hit single yet nobody picks up the album (how many people do you know that own True Story?). I didn't get a chance to hear There's Something About Remy, but I decided to listen to her latest mixtape, The BX Files.
Remy is supposed to have another proper studio album in the works, but now that she's serving an eight-year prison sentence for shooting her best friend, that's probably why this mixtape was released instead. But I wonder if you can really call this a mixtape instead of just a collection of vaulted tracks because in a few places Remy lists her age as being 21 or 22, and she was 26 when this was released. But that doesn't really matter in this case because this mixtape is even better than her album. Despite "Where My Bitches @" having a played-out title, that is actually one of the best tracks on here. Other jams include "Influentials" (featuring husband Papoose), "Get Money, Stay Fly" and "No Bet Chill". "Loadin' Clipz" is a creative track that serves as a metaphor for gun-toting rather than being about blasting in itself, and the necessary end-of-album acoustic song "Outside Lookin' In" uses a nice sample of Staind's "Outside". Speaking of that though, that song is about Remy making mistakes in her life, and it's ironic that she made a song like that right before she went to prison. In the end, while "Y'all Don't Really Want It" took the words right out of my mouth (well, the monotonous chorus, anyway), The BX Files is worth bumpin' in your ride. Pick it up if you're able to find it. Anthony Rupert

A great independent effort. Remy Ma dazzles on the BX files. The reason I give this album four stars instead of 5, is because of the fact that Remy has a tendency to give into a bad habit of recycling lyrics that she spits on other projects. Although, not over-abundantly, I feel that she should just keep coming with the new lyrics and leave the older ones in their respective places. I really enjoyed this project. My favorite tracks were "No Bet Chill", "Tech 9", "Rapid Fire", and "Y'all Don't Really Want it." The only song I wasn't really feeling was "Outside Looking In" due to the fact that Remy's style is too hardcore to be spitting on a beat that's obviously of an alternative genre. Nevertheless, her style, swagger, delivery, and overall talent as a lyricist really shines.

Remy .... It took a few listens but this cd is really growing on me. The strongest 4 songs are the last 4 songs on the cd with ME being the best. Can't wait for the follow up Punisher ..... I hope the rest was all publicity.

THE QUINTESSENTIAL COLLECTORS ITEM FOR THE REMY FAN.FROM THE INTRO,WITH THE TAPPING ON THE TABLE AND THE ACAPELLA VERSE,SHE STARTS PROVING HER SKILLS.THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN HER FIRST MAJOR LABEL RELEASE.CLASSIC REMY TRAX ARE ALSO INCLUDED SUCH AS LETS GET IT ON,SO HOT AND NO BET CHILL.ON EACH OF THESE BANGERS,REMY MANAGES TO COMBINE HARDCORE WORDPLAY WITH OFF THE BLOCK BRAVADO.IN MY OPINION, ONE OF THE BEST FEMALE SPITTERS NEXT TO KIM AND MAYBE FOXY.DEFINITELY CUT FROM THAT SAME CLOTH BUT WITH A LITTLE MORE OF TODAY'S COMPLEX WORDPLAY.WORTH A LISTEN,IF YOU ARE A CONNOISSUER OF FINE RAP TASTES.
